The amount of oxidation on the blade will be worse the stronger you have the air blast running (if you are heating in a forge). Having the steel closer to the air blast (in the decarburising layer of the fire) will also lead to more fire scale forming. Really, to HT you want a steady, low blast, and the steel should be heated towards the middle of the fire, to minimize decarburisation and scale formation. Also, heating the steel slower when hardening will make it less likely to become warped through rapid, uneven, heating.
More learned people with practical experience may be able to tell you real tricks of the trade. All I know of is from books, for now.
