Does anyone have a link to a diagram of the Petersen Typology for viking swords? I'm rather lost on the different types of viking swords and the only diagram I've been able to find is relatively unclear (it also only covers hilts).

Hmm. Thanks, Talon. It seems to match what I found:

The best English language reference is Ian Peirce's book "Swords of the Viking Age". In it you will see that Petersen only typed hilts. He did not type blades. The book references Geibig's blade typology. Broadly speaking, the Viking blades generally followed Oakeshott's type X blade; Geibig's typology points out the subtle differences in those blades. If you are a Viking sword enthusiast I highly recommend obtaining a copy of Ian Peirce's book.

I saw that a few hours ago, actually; it's what made me start searching for the Petersen Typology.
@jrj: Thanks for the info. I guess since Petersen only typed hilts, the graph I found is pretty complete.

At the Vikingsword site, I believe, they have a download of a PDF with a copy of Petersen's book. That should help you out with the various hilts. And yes, Geibig is the blade typology, Petersen hilts, hence why you see sometimes "Geibig type V blade, hilt of Petersen type G" or whatever. Oakeshott actually started his typology after Geibig's, I believe, which is why his starts with X and not I.

When I said that Geibig's blade typology generally followed Oakeshott's type X, I meant that they were similar, not that they came after. Just to clarify.
