Hello. I thought I'd go ahead and do a write-up on my two newest knives. This review is for the Winchester 22-41206 Large Bowie Knife with Sheath, had for $19.95 w/free shipping from Amazon.com.
Technical Details
* Features a 8.57-inch surgical stainless steel fixed blade
* Equipped with durable finger grooved wood with brass cross guard
* Full tang construction for increased strength
* Convenient size of 14.25-inches with a blade length of 8.75-inches and overall weight of 14.4-ounces
* Includes a ballistic nylon sheath
These are the numbers off of the Amazon site, and are accurate to my knowledge.
Here are some pictures.
This is a play on the famous Colonel Jim Bowie's knives. As I understand, the design and construction of the original was by Mr.James Black.
The knife is pretty nice. I like the over-all design. It is balanced to feel somewhat blade heavy, but that is understandable. This feels more geared towards outdoors type use than for actual fighting. The construction is good, but not great. It came with slight play in the blade. I can twist it slightly, but not enough to get any measurement on it, so less than a mm. The blade came pretty sharp with no chips or blemishes on the blade or handle. The sheath is cheap nylon with a plastic liner and a fairly large belt loop. The plastic leaves scuffs on the blade whenever I use it. These come off with a simple wipe, but are annoying nonetheless. After using this knife to chop a 2x4 into several pieces to make a rest for a waterstone, it received minimal scratch damage with no lessening of the edge or chips. The play in the handle is slightly worse, but still to slight to measure. I like the wood and finish used on the handle, but the hand-guard looks fairly cheap. A double snap loop system secures the knife in the sheath. This is annoying and I don't use it, but is good to have there just in case.
Pros:
Attractive
Well balanced for intended use(outdoors, batoning wood.)
Inexpensive
Solid
Cons:
Sheath
Slight play in handle
Final thoughts:
I like this knife and would buy it again. It has proved sturdier than I first gave it credit for and is a steal for the price.
Please feel free to post questions and comment. Thank you.
