So, i saw the tutorial made by Tom K. and i'd like to try his method to polish and sharpen my katana. There's a few scratches that i'd like to remove, and i would also like to make it very sharp.
I'm not sure what sand paper i need exactly. I'm wondering if i need to start out with a 500 grit paper. Would it be enough to start with 1000 and then 2000 paper ?
I went to my local ''canadian tire'' earlier today, and the choice of sand paper was minimum..... I only saw some ''fine'' and ''very fine'' 600 grit mastercraft sand paper. I didn't buy it.
So, i'm looking to buy online instead. I want to use to same paper you guys use.
Thx.

I think I used either 400 or 600 to start and them moved up to 1000, 1500, 2000 and then 2500. I could get up to 1500 at the locak hardware store but I had to go to a local automotive pait store to get anything above 2000. The paint store is a local owned business and I don't think they have a web site otherwise I would send you a link. Good luck.

Canadian Tire has grits up to 4000 but you have to go into the automotive section for these. Canadian Tire has everything!

Hobby stores may carry what you need. I was in the local Hobby Lobby the other day and saw a set of sandpapers that went up to 12,000 grit.

Believe it or not, it's for polishing steel. 12000 is the final stage to a true mirror finish.

Its also used on high end model kits as a final step to sand down seams as well as finishing up the paint job.

Don't forget, you could always ask someone that works there.
I've saved myself hours of searching time by swallowing my man pride and asking where something is.

Greg, you need to resist that temptation, bro. You're going to give our gender a bad rep. Men don't ask for directions. Remember, we don't shop, we hunt. Stumbling around Canadian Tire looking for something that's kept behind the counter is all part of the chase.

yea! if you don't go rooting around looking for the stuff you need to buy, how will you ever find all the other stuff you DIDN'T know you needed to buy? (see how this could adversely effect the world economy?)
