I only have the most general sort of knowledge of steelwork. I am hoping you guys can help with a newbie question.
I am working on my DSA ranger and i notice a dark hard coating on the tang and the inside of the cast handle. it kinda reminds me of welding slag, but thinner. do i need to clean it off before i reassemble? rust inside is what i am concerned about.
I am fascinated and would really like to hear anything you would care to share. Thanks in advance

Is it steel? There is often some bits of metal coated sand stuck to poor castings, if not cleaned off properly they won't do much, no need to clean it off, just lay some oil on the tang when you reassemble.

Sounds to me like it's just scale/oxidation that occurred during the heat treating process, and wasn't cleaned off due to the fact that it wouldn't be visible. I wouldn't worry about it , but like Sam said, a little oil couldn't hurt (Not too much though or you may start to hurt the wood handle core). Hope this helps, Dan

The handle on that sword isn't wood. It's cast metal.

It will just be firescale from forging. Its not corrosive or anything to my knowledge. But it will be very easy to remove with some 180 sandpaper. Oil after sanding. I use mineral gear oil. Oils is oils.
