Ok, first of all, first post and first time on this forum. I have just started collecting swords recently and have been working on maintenance. I watched Tom's method and I thought I would try it out. It worked great, but I thought I could add my own ideas. I got 400, 600, 1000, and 2000 grit sandpapers and I would progressively move up in grit. Also I a padding of paper towel under the sandpaper to give it a spongy feel so it would move along the blade much smoother. Paper sharpness was achieved and water bottles were not a problem.

That would work better actually, the paper would have some give to mold the sandpaper to the blade. Good tip.

Or get a rubber sanding block instead for $3 at Menards.
