Hi All I have recently returned to Melbourne Australia after 9 years living in Japan with my family. I studied a traditional Japanese sword style whilst there. I have the rank of Godan (5th Dan) and my Japanese sword teachers presented me with a Kaiden Menkyo (traditional sword teaching license) giving me permission to teach this style outside of Japan, and also gave me the official title of Shihan. I am the only foreigner with permission to teach this particular style outside of Japan. Kuroda Han, Yagyu Shinkage-Ryu, Heiho, Aratsu-Kai www.yagyushinkage-ryu.com/Yagyu Shinkage-Ryu has a well documented and honourable history dating back well over 600 years. It was chosen as the number 1 sword style by the last 3 Shoguns (warlords) of Japan, above all other styles. My faction was sent to Fukuoka (situated on the large island of Kyushu) as advisors and bodyguards to protect Lord Kuroda, assist in the fortifications of his castle, train his soldiers and prepare for battle. To this day we proudly perform demonstrations in Japan under the Lord Kuroda Mon (family crest). I have found this sword style to be really fascinating and extremely interesting. This is a "living museum", keeping alive a noble tradition that contributed greatly to the future of a great nation such as Japan. This sword style has contributed to my other great passion and love, Aikido (over 30 years studying and teaching in New Zealand, America, Australia and Japan). My aikido has changed and improved immensely, due to the study of this sword style. My centre is lower, my posture stronger and more centred. I finally understand the Japanese way of producing power by using your hips, instead of the Westernised ideal of power coming from your upper body and purely made up of physical strength. www.aikidoka.co/ Studying Japanese sword will improve any other martial art that you may study. Especially if it comes from Japan as the sword played a major role in the Japanese martial way for many centuries. Just be careful who you chose to study sword with. Many people who claim to be able to teach traditional Japanese sword sadly have had no official training, or recognised rank. To be safe, ask for their qualifications, ask where they came from, ask who taught them, ask if they have any direct link with Japan, ask what is their history, what is their link to the style they teach, ask if your ranking will be recognised and registered in Japan. Then check it all out to be sure. I have heard that there are people out there who are teaching Japanese sword to paying customers, and yet they have had no official training or qualifications. Some even teach others after just watching DVD's of the sword. I would think that this would be considered fraud here in Australia. What insurance company would cover people like this? If some accident did happen through this practise the teachers would be in serious trouble if sued. Be very careful people, the sword is a very dangerous weapon, sharp or blunt, and should only be taught by a fully qualified certified experienced professional. Thank you for reading this article, be safe and good luck to you all. Paul Araki-Metcalfe Melbourne, Australia Traditional Japanese sword Shihan. I currently hold the rank of Godan(5th Dan black belt) Kuroda Han, Yagyu Shinkage-Ryu, Heiho, Aratsu-Kai also Aikikai Aikido Founder and Dojo cho of Aikido Alliance Australia Currently hold the rank of Yondan (4th Dan black belt)

I am currently working on a long distance course for people who, for whatever reason, are unable to come to me for training. This would involve the use of modern technology such as DVD's, the internet, SKYPE (free phone and video-conferencing facilities) etc. Basically sword training is based on the "monkey see, monkey do" system. My Japanese teachers spoke little or no English, and my Japanese was quite pathetic, but they were still able to teach me. I focused really hard each lesson watching their every move and gesture to understand what they were saying and then practiced, practiced, practiced. If you are interested then by all means have a look at my website, read all the info there, and email me. If I decide to teach long distance there must be an honourable agreement between myself and each student. They are not allowed to share their learning, or the DVD, with anyone else. Only the one person who has booked and paid for this long distance course will receive their official certification. Anyone else who sees and tries to copy the DVD will not be granted official certification or be recognized in any way. If it is found out that the student breaks this rule, they will be refused further teaching. Keep in mind that if more than one student (a group together) partakes in this long distance course, they can greatly assist each other, and sometimes accelerate the learning curve, by discussing and working out any problems as a group. So better for you if you gather a group together and study the long distance course together as one unit. Where there is a will, there is always a way. www.shadowsword.co/All the very best Paul

No offense is meant by this then but by your own advice I must ask since you've posted in public - who was/were your teacher(s). How can we find records of your credentials and your teacher(s)' credentials? Where was the school you studied at located and how could we contact said school for verification of your credentials?
Again I mean no offense nor am I hoping to start an argument. However I have personally seen many schools and/or people who claim to have received a certification to teach a specific art and then end up being a fraud. Many have touted lineages and qualifications which did not exist - my own sensei is one of such people regarding kenjutsu.
Therefore out of curiosity's sake and also partly out of a desire to make sure things are on the up and up I must ask of you this information.
Sincerely,
Sam

Hi Sam Just click onto my website and you will find all the info you desire relating to my lineage and that of my teachers. I also have all the certificates handed to me by my Japanese sword teachers through my years training in Japan. I also have movies and DVD of my years training in Japan (you will see my hair growing longer and being cut shorter through the years there). By all means it is your right to ask questions an seek confirmation of someone's stated qualifications. If you wish you can come and talk to me, I will gladly show you all the proof and documentation that you may desire. I have also submitted my application to a major martial arts association here in Australia. Martial Arts Industry Association (MIAI). They require copies of all your rankings, names and contact details of all the teachers who taught you throughout the years for their official checking and verification procedures. Once they have done their stringent verification procedure, and are completely satisfied that your credentials are bone-fide, they will then allow you to become an official member of their association. I am happy to go through all this cross checking and verification as it only helps to decrease the chances of people being scammed by unqualified persons pretending to be something they are not. I still do not understand why people so freely give their time and money to someone who may not even be the holder of any official rank. I know of people who proclaim themselves as 6th Dans, yet I know for a fact that they only hold the official rank of 2nd Dan. I know of huge martial art school in Australia that is headed by a person who gets a black belt here and another over there, add them all together and call himselve a 10th Dan. Absolutely ludicrous, quite fraudulent and totally dishonorable. I know of a school in Melbourne that teaches Japanese sword, not with any official ranking or skill, they copy an old DVD they have in a drawer at the Dojo. So much for Australia cleaning up their act and getting rid of the "cowboys" in the martial art industry. I am personally horrified at what is going on in Australia, even though the Government has stepped in to apparently clean it all up and prevent people being scammed and ripped off. Keep asking questions and look before you leap. All the very best Paul All the best Paul

Mr. Metcalfe,
I appreciate your reply and offer to meet with me. However if you will take note of my location in my profile I am literally on the other side of the world in regards to your physical location. As such coming to meet with you just to verify your credentials is absolutely out of the question. Thank you though for the invitation.
Now then regarding the body of your reply. Again I hope you don't find this disrespectful - I myself have been the subject of a lie regarding the style of kenjutsu I studied and as is commonly said - once bitten twice shy. What I have to say and ask I do so with the utmost respect and I mean no offense in this nor do I insinuate you are not a legitimate teacher of your discipline. In fact in asking these questions I only seek to further your position as a legitimate teacher of Kuroda Han Yagyu Shinkage Ryu.
1. Regarding your training in Japan - I don't doubt that it occured. I am simply asking for a public posting of who your teachers are/were - and where/how they could be contacted (just mail would suffice) for verification purposes. Rest assured I will not contact them myself however there is at least one individual on this forum who has expressed interest in your tutelage. What is available on your website is cryptic at best (3 very short and uninformative videos as well as a handful of photos). Aside from that (again no offense meant here) there is the usual sales pitch that I see on many martial arts websites. I have thoroughly read your website and have found it to be of no real help in ascertaining the validity of your credentials. I have seen websites that show photos and videos of people who have studied under Japanese masters in Japan and claimed many different credentials but did not actually have them. My sensei was one of those people actually so I hope you can understand my skepticism.
2. I have read through the MAIA website and perused all of its forms and documents. What I gathered from the readings was that they do indeed verify your "bona fides" however such bona fides pertain to government required training in first aid, risk management, child protection and having the proper insurance. Whether you are a Category 1 member (of which there are only 3), Category 2 member (of which there are only 6), or a Category 3 member (of which you cannot be since you are teaching for profit and Cat. 3 is only for non-profit) the requirements are pretty much the same when it comes to credentials - that you meet government required levels of the previously mentioned criteria. Accreditation through MAIA also only requires that you meet those criteria. The applications ask of your years in training and experience and the "Date and Location of Course" but the line given is very short and not suitable for a detailed answer. Afterwards it asks what style is taught by the applicant and goes on to ask for venues of teaching etc.
At the end of the application they have this (along with other small type legal jargon):
"14. The applicant agrees and accepts that by signing this application that Accreditation, if granted, is contingent upon the applicant: i) being part of the accreditation update program ii) meeting all accreditation course requirements iii) maintaining a current First Aid qualification iv) being insured by an APRA regulated insurer at the minimum coverage level designated by the MAIA v) abiding by the National Code of Practice for Martial Arts Centres and Instructors The Applicant acknowledges that he/she has been advised that the course fee paid to the MAIA is only part of the cost involved in completing the accreditation requirements and that other costs may be incurred in completing the course. The Applicant acknowledges that, in order to complete this course, he/she must have access to a computer that is capable of reading DVD’s."
There are three courses that you must pay for and complete in order to reach various levels of accreditation - none of which really have to do with verifying your credentials.
3. While I appreciate you talking about other schools you know of that are scams - I didn't ask about them. Thank you but that information is irrelevant to the questions I asked of you.
4. Of a personal interest note - What is the difference between Yagyu Shinkage Ryu and Kuroda Han Yagyu Shinkage Ryu? Obviously there is a difference in lineage (or am I mistaken?) at some point but what else are the differences?
5. About membership to your school - why would you encourage people to purchase a member ship to your school despite the fact that they could not study with you? I just find that to be a bit odd of a legitimate martial arts school.
Oh yes by the way you're not the only Metcalfe I've heard of or encountered in Martial Arts. I ran in to a Mr. Micheal Metcalfe in Detroit, Michigan that taught Shotokan Karate. We had many discussions and I thought him to be a very pleasant and knowledgeable fellow. I also encountered a Mr. Don Metcalfe in Chicago who practiced but did not teach Wushu. We only had a few brief conversations then he had to leave for the west coast. I have not kept in touch with either of these gentlemen however I remember them fondly. Are you by chance related to either one of them at all? Just to note neither one of them are related to the other.
Again please don't take offense at this and I'm glad to have the opportunity to chat with you. I would appreciate learning the differences between YSR vs. KHYSR.
Thank you very much,
Sam

I have not read your profile Sam, sorry too busy. "No offense meant" comes up a lot in your messages as you try to confirm, or it seems, try to rubbish my credentials. If you are across the world and cannot visit me or personally check my credentials, too bad for you. I personally chose my students and have no intention of being a money making industry. I am working on a DVD course for people who I personally accept to teach and cannot attend my classes personally. This style is almost extinct, and I will do whatever I can to preserve it. If I post my grading certificates and teaching license online, do you not think some individual whose has a fantasy about being a real sword teacher may download to try to alter and use these as their proof of who they are? I really do not care if you believe me or not, you are no one to me sorry and please take no offense. I do not know who you are or if you have any credentials yourself. I do not answer to you, sorry my friend. MAIA does check out your credentials when you apply to join. This is to ensure that you can be a legitimate member and that the insurance company will cover you against any claims. Seriously, if you are a fake the insurance company has a valid reason not to cover you and you will be sued for all you own. I answer only to my Japanese teachers ii Fukuoka Japan, and of course to the proper Government authorities here in Australia, not some unknown who asks for answers then shoots them all down. No offense meant of course. Have a great life and enjoy the journey whoever you are P.S. I only occasionally pop in here to see what is going on so forgive any delays in replies. In all honesty, if you do not like what you see on my website and do not believe I am who I say I am. Just do not join me. Don't waste your time commenting. A real easy, and very simple way, to deal with it all, isn't it? I have commented on this site believing it to be a place to introduce myself and what I have to offer. I will not get into a competition with people who have nothing better to do than shoot others down. Not worth my time or effort. To the genuine people, thanks for reading. To the antagonists, get a life. Paul

I mention "No offense intended" because of the fact that I do not mean any offense. As for answers you haven't provided any concrete answers to my questions.
It is in my opinion that anyone who professes to be a master of something and chooses to teach others at the same time opens themselves up to the scrutiny of the public eye. I have no intention of besmudging your credentials nor do I mean to antagonize you. I did as you suggested - asked questions to check credentials and continued to ask when I did not get actual answers to what I asked originally.
and prior to that
Both of these quotes are directly from you.
As for why I ask - well aside from you saying we should ask - I also explained I was fooled by my sensei regarding my martial arts. As such my rank in kenjutsu is NOT recognized by any organization despite the time and money I've invested. I was also given a Ni Dan in Isshin Ryu Karate however due to my sensei's status of well... having no teaching status, has rendered that rather umm... useless too. I used to teach martial arts some 10 yrs ago as an assistant instructor to a local school (more like an assistant teaching a style the school's master didn't know) but once I found out that my teacher's credentials were falsified and mine were in question I quit teaching. My goal is not so much to besmudge you (as this sort of scrutiny will surely befall you anyway from any serious martial artist looking to study with you) but rather to solidify your claims and credentials here on this forum. I never said you were a fake - it was you who first mentioned fakes in your original post. I also never insinuated that your credentials were not valid - just that we have no way of verifying them. Even the requirements posted on the AMIA website do not speak of checking such credentials - only about meeting government requirements. This is not a discredit to the AMIA - just that it doesn't provide much for the discerning eye in the way of validity.
Now you state that you choose your students and have no intention of being in a money making industry. You would have to be interdependently wealthy to not want to make a profit. If so I envy you. If not how do you expect to support your hobby? I see you also founded another school/organization based in the art of Aikido. Is that also not for profit?
I am not asking by the way for you to post your certificates and/or licenses online. What I did ask of you was more how do we send an inquiry to the school you studied at regarding your teaching status with them? Basically - What's the school's mailing address? As for people copying and falsifying your certificates and licenses - you know as well as I do that a cursory check in your government's databases or for that matter doing what I'm doing would root out the fakes that would steal your credentials.
Now about insurance companies - laws in your country may differ from those in mine and that's just a part of life. What I can tell you was that I was at one point in time a licensed insurance agent and while I am no longer an agent and no longer sell insurance I do know a bit about insurance. Its rather easy to get insurance companies to insure you - for just about anything. Its only when you get sued that things get sticky...
Now then you're right you really don't have to answer to me. If I were someone wanting to gain students though I'd be as forthcoming with the information I've asked for as possible to avoid confusion. Now then all that said - I am sorry that I have offended you. I will cease seeking validation of your credentials. However I will state now that I cannot in good conscience recommend you to anyone as a teacher in the future, near or far, till I have such validation. I also cannot call you sensei or any other title aside from Mr. Metcalfe and perhaps friend.
Out of purely personal interest though please would you be so kind as to oblige me by answering my question about the differences between Kuroda Han Yagyu Shinkage Ryu and Yagyu Shinkage Ryu? I honestly wish to know the difference and sadly my google-fu must be really bad as of late because every time I try to google Kuroda Han Yagyu Shinkage Ryu your name is directly associated with it in every result that google brought up. There is no reference to Fukuoka Japan or any school there nor is there any reference to anyone else but you. That makes you the first and foremost expert on this ryu and as such you are the only one I can ask to tell me the differences between the two styles. I figure with the two styles sharing the same name you must get this question often?

Sir,
As someone who study koryu, you must know that lineage is the most important aspect of a koryu, more important than even the efficacy or effectiveness of the style. Since there are 2 main lines of Yagyū Shinkage-ryū and several lesser known lines. If you are a member of the two main lines, it would be very easy to verify because they are quite famous. But there are less information on the other lines. And there is no information on Kuroda Ha, at least not in English. I am genuinely interested in how the line separated. Think of this as giving us a lesson in koryu history.
PS: Yagyu Shinkage Ryu is not anywhere near extincted. Both of the main lines are spreading throughout the four corners of the world. Maybe the risk of extinction is pertaining only to your line.

Next year i am moving, and as to where is basically up to the best Dojo i can find. So this information, if not to prove people wrong or right WILL help new students like me make the most informed choice.

Firstly My name is Paul Araki-Metcalfe. Kuroda Han is the name at the front of our sword school. It means of Kuroda, the Lord of Fukuoka, the one we were sent to protect way back when. I was told by the 14th Soke (Headmaster of the sword school) that our faction was sent to Fukuoka to protect Lord Kuroda. Yes, this is a faction directly from Yagyu Shinkage-Ryu. You will see on my website a document written in Japanese showing the direct link to the origins of Yagyu Shinkage-Ryu called Kage-Ryu verified by the Head of Kage-Ryu. So you may be able to see why I do not feel I have to prove myself to you or anyone else for that matter. I have all the documented proof I need to know how genuine my style is showing a direct and verified link from the Headmaster of Kage-Ryu back to the beginning of Yagyu Shinkage-Ryu (kage-Ryu). My style has Kuroda Han in the front as we have a close connection with Lord Kuroda. Then it has Yagyu Shinkage-Ryu (which we all know as the famous sword style) then Heiho which means from the battlefield or battlefield techniques. Aratsu-Kai on the end means pure heart or true heart. One car accident, and my style could no longer exist in Japan. Their numbers are few as most Japanese are fanatical about baseball these days and less interested in the old ways of Budo. Sorry that you were duped many times by people you trusted. Perhaps you should attack them as they are the ones who did you wrong. I am thinking that perhaps anyone who comes to this site cops it from you due to your history and the past bad experiences you have had. If the webmaster in charge choses to look back on your posts, will he find similar behaviour from you towards anyone who comes here and introduces themselves? I think you need to get over your past and move on. But, not by attacking innocent people who come along to be a part of this group or any other. What has happened to you was wrong and it should not be so. I sincerely hope you find a genuine teacher one day and let the hate go. On my site it mentions the Terumo Jinja (shrine). This is in Fukuoka, and is the shrine dedicated to Lord Kuroda. There is film of us demonstrating there on special days. My Japanese teachers speak only Japanese, so unless you are fluent how can it possibly assist you in your quest to seek verification of me? I will have them down to Australia for Seminars in time and you are most welcome to come and join in when they do. I will , and have, supplied their contact details for verification to MAIA and any other official authority here in Australia. Part of the course that MAIA holds, is a course set out by the Australian Government which is called Level 1 teaching/coaching certification course which tries to weed out the "cowboys" in the industry. This has been set out by the Australian Government and they have given charter to certain reputable organisations, MAIA being one of them. One of the requirements to certification is the verification of your rank and teachers. Therefore, I answer to a higher power than you my friend. Being the Australian Government and more specifically the Minister in charge of Sports. I will not just give out my Japanese teachers details for any possible nut to contact them and bother them. What sort of student would I be to do that to them? Yes I am registered as a Not for Profit association here in Australia. Money is usually the reason people make fraudulent claims in an attempt to get it off you, as you well know from your past experiences sadly. Because I am Not for Profit, I can pick and choose my students, and not take just anyone to make a buck. I now understand why you do what you do. Try to understand that if a genuine person introduces themselves in a group such as this, they may take offense to being picked apart as soon as they arrive by someone like you. There is no need to do this, and who gave you the position as judge jury and executioner anyway? Let it go Sam, move on, and try to find a genuine teacher who may be able to help you get over it rather than working so hard to punish and pick apart anyone who comes to this site in an open genuine friendly way. I introduced myself an what I do to this site as I thought it was a place for genuine people to come and chat about the wonders and shred love of the sword. If you like what I say and do then we can build up a frienship based on our mutual love of the Japanese sword. If you do not like what I have say and do then move on. I am genuine. The Government of Australia, the Sports Minister of that Government and the Government recognised national martial arts association MAIA all judge me and verify the credentials that were given to me by my Japanese teachers. Also the insurance company if they find any discrepancy in my credentials can refuse to honour any claim against me if I am fake. In Australia you have to have 20 million dollars liability cover in case of any accident that may occur. If you do not have this you could lose all that you have and more. Hopefully all the above will slowly weed out the sort of people that give martial arts a bad name and sadly affect many people like you Sam all over the world. There are so many people who contribute to web chat sites all over the world, and sadly some are false people. All I can say is that if you like what I have to say then join in, if you do not, go elsewhere and don't waste your valuable time or mine. Enjoy the journey Paul You take care now Paul

I did let it go. I ceased pursuing your credentials and instead only asked one favor of you - to explain to me the difference between your style of Yagyu Shinkage Ryu and the styles that are currently quite famous and well known. As such you have NOT done so. You see you are correct in assuming I do not speak or read Japanese (at least not well enough to make use of what you offer as proof of your lineage). Aside from that the lineage means nothing to me on a piece of paper. What I and others have asked for was an explanation as to how your particular style (Kuroda Han Yagyu Shinkage Ryu) and either Edo or Mainland Yagyu Shinkage Ryu. Thus far you have not explained this and I am inclined to believe that you will not explain this.
As for contributing money to a chat site - that's to help maintain a chat site that we use. Not all of us contribute money either. You ask that people join your school and contribute money even if they are not studying with you. That in itself is rather odd of a martial arts school. Personally I've NEVER heard of any martial arts school asking for people to contribute money for a facility they would not be using themselves. I know if I were ever asked to do so I wouldn't possibly consider doing such a thing.
I won't bother pointing out anything else as I have let it go. What happened to me I don't want to happen to others. I normally do not ask this of others that join except that in your first six posts on this forum you advertised your school and style/lineage rather heavily. That opens you up to scrutiny. It also suggests you do NOT do this as a not for profit enterprise. In any case as I said I just don't want others to be duped. Now what I learned certainly worked. I fought in many tournaments against a total of hundreds of fighters and have won the majority of my fights. I consider myself a competent and fairly proficient fighter in hand to hand and also consider myself a fairly competent swordsman (although I'd never consider myself "good"). It just happens to be that my credentials well... don't exist since my teacher was never given authorization to teach those arts despite the amount of money, time, blood and sweat I put into it.
This is the last time I'll post in this thread Mr. Metcalfe. As you say I won't waste my time or yours anymore. I hope that you don't waste anyone else's time too. I'll try on my behalf not to waste anyone else's time as well.
Good luck and I hope not for my sake or yours but for anyone who may choose to study with you are not what you have accused others of being.
Enjoy the journey Sam
Btw - why do you end your posts with two salutations? Don't bother to answer that - I am just curious and I believe my personal curiosity doesn't compel you enough to answer.
Sam

It sounds from a non biast view point like you BOTH need to show abit more respect to each other and keep it abit more simple *its not a competition*. Those are good questions, and your probably a great instructor. But no need to get ethier offensive or defensive about it in ETHIER party.

had to wade in on this as a life long victorian martial artist and assitant instructor and devloper of a system i have never heard of the martial arts industry association but know of plenty of bodies that for a fee will legitimise your school or style, there is no law that states you must be insured registered or even qualified to teach in victoria the only government accreditation is the ncas (national coaching accreditation scheme) but that covers all sport not just ma and doesnt state what you are qualified in just that you are qualified, im sorry but have to agree with sam if you are unwilling to give out information or you dont want people to discuss your style you are not someone i would want to train with, and since you kept bringing it back to the fact your style is almost extinct you should want to have more people discuss it not less that is how you find students. and as for club that teaches from dvd isnt that exactly what your proposing to do? (offence well and truly meant)
