I am wondering between making a Damascus steel knife from a blank or buying myself a katana blade and making my self a brand spanking new katana. With my skill (Which is next to nothing, except for wood working and very mild metal working) would the Damascus be a waste?

Not necessarily a waste. But buy some monosteel and practice stock-removal and heat-treating using it first.
As far as customizing a katana blade, I have found that it is easier to buy a complete katana, and change out/modify certain parts of it the way you like. That way you don't have to make a new saya and tsuka, which can be quite difficult to do nicely, even for an accomplished woodworker.

I can actually buy a folded steel differently hardened blade though... Maybe I should replace it in my masahiro?

I was also thinking of turning my old blade into a katana-like spear. I can do wood work, so I am not worried about that.

Yes swapping blades and fittings between swords is a good option too. What is the blade you are talking about?

Why did you order from cec? I thought they were an aussie company? You'd be better ordering from america wouldn't you? I think you need to start with the basics and work your way up.

You are talking about the Cutting Edge knife store in the Centre shopping mall, right?
BTW, where do you live, Moose Jaw or something? Snowbirds FTW!
