Does anyone know where I can buy a 2 1/2'' wide, 1/2" thick and 5 or 4 foot long piece of 1065 to 1095 Carbon steel in Canada? If not can someone who can get a hold of this sell me some?

I would just go to a junkyard and get some leaf spring.

Does every junkyard have the size I need? I have no idea of this kind of stuff.

Does every junkyard have the size I need? I have no idea of this kind of stuff. It depends, but most of the time when you mention leaf spring they will have no problem whipping something together. In fact, when I asked for some, and I mentioned a was using it for a project, the first thing the guy said was "making yourself a sword, are ya?" They gave my some steel within these parameters. I think most of leaf spring is actually 5160, I dont know if that is important to you or not. 5160 is likely a better material of swords than 1065 of 1090, in my opinion.

That sounds good. Just regular leaf spring? Or do they come in different materials?

That sounds good. Just regular leaf spring? Or do they come in different materials? Just ask for a regular leaf spring. It should look something like this (probably rustier): You dont really need an anvil, just a log or something. I would be very surprised if it was of any material besides what is suitable for a sword. It is what it is: Spring Steel. Each one of those layers is enough to make a blade, progressing from sword to dirk, dagger, etc.

I got my steel for my sword project (currently underway) from a leaf spring manufacturer. I asked for a flat, untempered (annealed) spring (so that it would be easy to work). They sold it to me, it was very cheap, and I didnt have to worry about rust or straightening it out. Its 9260, apparently. That steel that is apparently so great.

Have you done a stack of google / yahoo searches for " Leaf Spring Manufacturer" and "Suspension Manufacturer" in Canada etc?

With the size you are talking about, why bother TRYING to make it functional and just made one from mild steel? Certainly won't be useable being 1/2 thick.
