Unfortunately, my first gun is broken beyond repair, and I was looking to replace it. Does anyone know where I can get a pretty cheap 22 Rifle, either bolt action or semi-auto?

Marlin Model 60 or any equivalent thereof. Nice shooting gun and for a semi-auto its quite accurate. More so than a Ruger 10/22. Although with the right modifications (namely an aftermarket bull barrel, free floating stock, upgraded fire control group and quality ammo) you could turn a 10/22 into a tack driver. If you want some really nice accuracy right out of the box (well after break-in period) you should look at the following: www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/MARKIIBTVBolt action Savage Mark II BTV. Nice looking gun and VERY nice shooting too! It'll cost you a little more than a Marlin Model 60 or other members of that family but it'll be much less than what you'll spend on a 10/22 and modifications. In fact for the money if I were looking for a great shooting rifle that I didn't have to mess with I'd buy it... oh wait I did a bit back. lol. I love all three guns I mentioned and own all three. Out of the three the Model 60 gets the most use by my son (age 7) because its an autoloader and its easy to load. He hates loading box mags. The Mark II BTV gets a lot of use from me simply because its a joy for me to shoot and its inexpensive for the most part at the range so I can put lots of lead down range and not have to worry about costs. My daughter (age 12) used to really enjoy the 10/22 but now that I have an AR with a 22 upper for it she shoots that more than anything else. With all three guns I'll set swinging targets out at 100 and 150yds. The targets are 2" in diameter and free swinging on swivels. All three of us can ring the targets at 100 yds. On a good day my son can ring them with the Model 60 at 150. Same goes for my daughter on either the 10/22 or the AR in .22lr. I can ring the targets at 150 all day long with the Mark II BTV... and on days with little to no wind I can even place them out at 200yds and ring them pretty consistently. We typically shoot subsonic ammo for 100yds and beyond... EDIT: Btw you mentioned your gun was broken - what's wrong with it? Perhaps it can be fixed?

I'll go with the Ruger 10/22 also my are very accurate with the standard barrels, but like most rifles th trigger do need some work.

That MARK II BVT looks really nice. I've seen ones that look like that but have weird camouflage on them (The only thing I can use to describe it would be Red and Blue Tiger from CoD)
My plan is to get one that's easily customizable; the M1911 of 22's I guess. (I have several custom M1911's I did myself... with the supervision of a gunsmith of course)

Easily customizable means the 10/22.
My 10/22s shoot well out of the box - both shoot fairly good groups at 50 and 100 yds. I can shoot out the black on an NRA standard target at 100yds on a good day with the scoped one. I can do that with the one with iron sights out to 50yds.
That's all fine and dandy and I like the 10/22 a lot. I'm just saying that for a bit more money you can get the Savage Mark II and get a real tack driver without having to modify it.

My all around vote also goes to the 10/22 for versatility and aftermarket customization options. However Savage has also served me well and has a good trigger(imho). For the cool factor you can't overlook the Henry survival Rifle ,i believe model 7,it floats, has a detachable barrel that can be stored in the butt, and uses a 10rnd mag. Great camping gun.

I like the old Martini action. But finding one here in the States is very rare.

i never thought of that, then again it's not too popular over here anymore either mike, you can pick them up for as little as £60,whats that about $100 for a basic mk11 international, most people are after ruger's and sako's ,im probably old fashioned lol,my ideal pistol is a c96 mauser, and my favourite revolver is a rodgers and spencer black powder  nearly forgot the thompson contender

Well with the recent Demise of Canada's Liberal party, and the Majority Victory for the Conservatives who want to preserve my gun rights, I purchased a new gun. Ruger's SR-22! Little bit more pricey but a dam good/fun gun!

If you want a mag fed .22, buy the 10/22. Just keep in mind that you'll probably be modifying the hell out of it and budget accordingly.
If tube fed is ok, I love my Marlin 60. It also just worked and the only mod I've made is a decent scope.

How do the less expensive Savage Mk IIs compare with their high-end models? I'm in the market for a good bolt action .22 and I've got it between a Mk2, CZ 452 and an out of production Remington. I'll want to at least start off with iron sights and maybe get a scope mounted later so I'd have some issues with the BTV methinks.
