Hey, all!
So I went a gun show in Vallejo today with my folks and a friend, and it was fun to look around. Hadn't been to one in years, and I was curious to see what the blade selection would be like. Typically, there were LOTS of small folders and "survival" knives, most of which were obviously NOT going to help you survive as I doubt that they could survive any kind of real use.
However, I did learn that my mom shares the same appreciation that I do for a finely machined and simple design aesthetic when it comes to knives. I didn't know this, but now that I do, I think perhaps I have my xmas gift idea. I had a Gerber Mark II back in the day, and I'm thinking that something like that would fit the bill. I know that they aren't made anymore, but I would love some suggestions for blades likes this.
Thanks!

A Fairbarn-Sykes commando knife, maybe? It's got a certain simple aesthetic to it that I like a lot, personally... plus there's the whole 'used in the war' thing going for it too even if it's a modern reproduction, like, say, a Colt .45 ACP pistol.

Who said Gerber MKIIs weren't made anymore? That's just the first one I found, so there's probably others.

Hey, Elheru!
That's very nice! However, I'd like to avoid a black blade if possible. I didn't know the Gerber Mark II is only available that way. She wants a nice satin finish on the blade, but we're getting close!
Darksword has some beautiful daggers. They may be a bit big for her, but I like the functionality and aesthetic.

Hey, Vincent!
I didn't know! At least they don't offer one that has a natural satin finish. I'm not partial to the all black aesthetic myself, and I know that my mom wouldn't either. If you know of anything like the GB Mk II that has a natural satin finish, link me!
Thanks!

You can get Fairbarn-Sykes daggers without the black finish on the blade. Just do a google search and you'll see plenty, trust me.
Hmm... Cold Steel has some pretty nice daggers. Could check those out.

Hmm. That's a little more difficult then, but I can see where you're coming from as I only like the all black on certain knives (aka, the Cold Steel Recon Tanto). In that case, there's the Applegate Fairbairn by Boker and that's it of that exact style; of similar dagger styles, there's the Boker Plus Schanz Integral Dagger, the Cold Steel Peace Keeper I, the Cold Steel Tai Pan, or the really inexpensive United Cutlery Combat Commander. I dunno your price point, but the Tai Pan is about the most I'd pay for a dagger. Also, as Jeff said, a Google search could find you a Fairbarn-Sykes with a satin blade. You also had an interest in the DSA daggers, right? Well, if you'd like a more medieval styled dagger, you can peruse what Kult of Athena offers here. Arms & Armor makes some beautiful daggers, but they don't come with sheaths. Windlass also makes some nice ones, though I believe some would debate on their durability (I haven't personally heard anything bad, though).

I really like the Tai Pan, myself. It used to be my favorite modern dagger... until I ran into Kizlyar KO-2. PS. Kizlyar's official US retailer only seems to have an etched version at the moment, and with a fairly hefty price tag too, but you can also find these on eBay for $155 + shipping...

www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store ... BH15UK00SL Blackhawk...Really a superb beauty. Maybe something here will catch your eye. The Boker also looks kinda cool...though I'm skeptical of the 440C at that price. www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store ... q%3Ddagger The DSA daggers are pretty hefty. Based on what you have said, I am assuming you want a combat/tactical double edged and relatively long fixed blade for mom. For sure these things are sizable belt carries- not sure I would ever personally use one for EDC

Hey, ghost!
Oh, MAN. That Blackhawk is definitely gorgeous! Right now I'm vacillating between that one and the Boker Plus Schanz Integral Dagger (SID) 7" Double Edged Blade with Micarta Handles (only prob with that one is that the sheath is crap). Although I'm still not sure if I want to go real or have a fantasy element like the DSA daggers. Hopefully, the coming months may provide me some further clues as to mom's preferences.
Many, many thanks to all who replied! What a pleasure to have so many beautiful options to choose from!
