All right. I just started this sword about a week ago, and it's going to be my first one. I started out with a 1/4" four foot long steel bar, and then used a cutoff wheel to get the basic outline for the tang. Once I got that done, I used the old angle grinder to strip away the excess steel. it really still needs to be tapered down toward the part of the tang i'm going to peen, though. The point on this one's gonna be a nice rounded angle when all's said and done, but for now, it's just a sharp angle. The fuller on this is going to be about 1/16" deep and 1/4 wide. the diamond point set will help that along, but it'l have to wait. Right, well I'm actually proud of this part. The cross started out as a 9" long 1/4 inch thick rectangle and I ground it down to its final shape, but no more than rough ground because I dont want the finish to be screwed up by the tempering process. Still looks good though! ;D That's about all I can do until the diamonds come and I get some pommel steel.

1045. Not a very high quality, but the best i could find. Probably, when i order the pommel steel, i'll also get some 1060.

Incredible job on the cross!
Ben, it may be too thin already, but consider adding facets to make it more than a square x-section (hexagonal, octagonal, etc.) - I think it will look even better!

Looks like its gonna be a very good sword. And 1045 isn't that bad, especially if its thick.

Yeah, I definitely like the idea of an octagonal cross section. may be just a little thin for it to look perfect on the ends, but it'l be all right. Oh, and Sam, I get my steel from a company called Admiral steel. They offer several different levels of carbon contents and about every size you could imagine, as well as rounds and squares for pommels. Here's the link. www.admiralsteel.com/

I Karma'd you Ben, but I lost my previous post. I was sayong good work and keep us posted.
I don't get what you're saying about heat treating the cross? It' doesn't need it. Just heat treat the blade and assemble it after. How did you slot the cross? It looks awesome!
What are you doing for the pommel? Let me know if you need any other tips, I'm on my fourth sword now and have made some mistakes that may save you some fussin'.
