Alright so odd question, can sword oil expire ? namely hanwei sword oil, while oiling up my blade a moment ago i ran out...so franticly i start digging around old boxes of mine and come across another bottle.. a really really old bottle of hanwei sword oil that is easily 4 years old. i checked it, looks a little darker than normal but i could be wrong, seems fine ....but i dunno... guess i have an irrational fear that sword oil turns into acid and will eat my blade   so yeah that about sums it up, can sword oil go bad ?

Sword oil is a hydrocarbon product. The discolouration can be due to sun exposure, evaporation, or the breakdown of additives. Hydrocarbon oils do have a shelf life. It's about 30,000 years. Even though the stuff has been in the ground much longer, oxidation seems to be the big problem once it reaches the surface. If you haven't had it sitting around for longer than about 30 millennia, you can go ahead and use it.

While this is a pretty rare concern, do try and make sure there isn't any condensation in your bottle of sword oil. If water gets in there, it'll get on the blade, and that oil won't do you any good; it's lighter than the water, so the water will stay on the blade while the oil separates from it... that's what I heard from my dad about oiling machetes, anyway...

If it has been left out or open, there is a chance you may have gotten various detritus in the oil. In that case just take a piece of cheesecloth and pour the oil through that. It should separate out anything gunk floating around in the oil.
