Well, I am pleased to present you with the Windlass 16th Centry German Mace.
Right out of the box I immediatly could tell that this thing could do some damage. I won't count this as an official review, but I did take some close up pictures and made a short video of me talking about it.
Overall Length: 23.75''
Weight: 1.98 lbs
Grip Diamter: 1"
Grip Length: 8"
Haft: Hollow Octagonal
Flanges: 8
Flange Length: 1.125"
Head:
Do not quote me on this, as I might be wrong, but it looks like every other flange is welded to the haft. The metal ring is hiding what could be additional welds, and it almost looks like that 4 of the flanges are welded to the ring and the other 4 are welded to the haft. Upon thourough inspection, I did not find anything that would seem unsafe. The head looks solid and after 20 or so 2L bottles, there are no cracks or any sign of weakness.
Grip:
I tried to capture how high the seam comes off the grip. It's nothing that buffing with a soft cloth couldn't handle. I also plan on either wrapping another layer of leather over top of this on, or doing a cord then leather wrap. The grip is just slightly to small to be comfortable in MY hands. In average hands it should feel perfect.
Haft:
No pictures here, but I'd like to go ahead and bring this up. While I was filming a smashing video, I overswung and hit a 2L bottle with the haft instead of the head. This wasn't any mamby pamby swing either, this was full on, with all my strength, striking the bottle about 3" down the haft from the head.
This had resulted in the head coming out of true. It wasn't bad or anything, and if I were to guess, I'd say that it was only 2 degrees or so out of true, but this is something to be aware of.
It is by no means a bad design and the heat treatment on the metal is such that the head did not snap off which is always a plus.
So if you purchase this mace and use it, be very careful to strike with the head and not the haft. It's along the same lines of making sure hit something with the edge of a sword, instead of the flat. As long as you use the mace like it was intended, it will work smashingly.
Video:
So where is this video I had mentioned? Well, something is afoul with something and both of the videos I recorded are coming up as invalid something or another and missing file location when I try to edit them. But tomorrow I promise to smash some more stuff with the mace and come back and share the video.
Needless to say, I was giddy with enjoyment.
