ok here it is do you think it would work if i somehow attached sand paper to a grinding wheel? or do you think it would just fail catastrophically and send bits of sand paper to skin my face for doing something so stupid

I don't think it's especially dangerous. It's just that I don't think whatever adhesion you use will stand up to the rpms, and I don't think the grit and paper backing will survive use for more than a few seconds.

Do you mean a bench grinder or a hand held grinder? They do make sanding wheels that you can attach to your hand held grinder. For a bench grinder, you could use a wire wheel... Wire cup attachments are available for your hand held grinder.

I think I see what you are trying to do here. Basically your bench grinder is taking off to much material to quickly for you to sharpen your blades, so you'd like to put a higher grit paper over the wheel.
All in all, I'd say get the right tool for the job. Believe me, I was exactly where you are right now 2 years ago. I was trying to think how I could use what I currently had to get what I needed to do done.
Harbor Freight sells a WONDERFUL bench-top belt sander for around 30 bucks. I've had it for 2 years and it's still going strong.
---But with all that being said, you posted this topic in the wrong sub-forum. This would more appropriately fall in the "Repair and Maintenance" section. Don't worry, the mods will be here shortly to move it.

thanks for the responses and thank you for moving it to the right section. that's what i was afraid of and about what i thought . i think i will try and jury rig something with my dremel and some belt sander belts. the hardware store just up the street from me has a lot of rubber rollers and the book i have from the library has a section about making a belt sander

Ooh, if you do that, please post pictures and/or directions... I'm interested in picking up a belt sander as well and if I could possibly knock together one from pieces, that would be awesome and probably cheaper.
