I can testify to the usefulness of inner tube rubber as a very, very durable material for making ALL SORTS of stuff; cat o` nine tails whips in various styles and sizes, masks, blindfolds and muzzles, just to name a few. I`ve been viewing the knifecenter.com machete review pages, and many people complain that for a couple of different brand name machetes, sheaths are only available at extra cost, sold separately. It suddenly hit me...inner tube rubber. It`s been a while since I`ve made anything out of inner tube rubber, but I think it might be just the ticket. I ordered three machetes from knifecenter yesterday, and when I get them, I`ll make sheaths out of inner tubes for them. For the two that don`t come with sheaths anyway. My technique for preparing them is to lay them as flat as possible, cut straight through across near the valve stem, with scissors, then straight up the outside circumference, like opening up a fish or game animal. Lay it out flat in your shower and wash away all the dirt, grime and cornstarch with soapy water and a hand brush, dry completely, and there you have flat black vulcanized rubber material to work with. I plan to use a machete sheath that came with a Tramontina I already own as a template to make my homemade sheaths when the machete delivery arrives. I`ve always gotten my inner tubes at a tire dealer specializing in large, heavy trucks, for absolutely free.

At least it would go well with tread armor.

Just what I need a rubber for my machetes. Bet it would get a hole in it.

So that's where little machetes come from. I always wondered.

interesting..well they are durable and easier to clean than leather..masks blindfolds and muzzles wouldn't breathe well (neither does pvc i hear) but i'd think a rubber cat o nine tails would hurt worse than leather :?
