I got this old (I mean OLD!) steel tanto. (Probably 1045 carbon, which I assume from the bent tip and rust). The handle is pretty much a piece of garbage and it is threaded. It has a nice snakeskin scabbard. I was planning on turning this into a spear, and fix the scabbard up a bit. What type of wood would make a good pole? i was thinking something ghetto like a broom handle, but what else can I do to make a sturdy pole? I will post up pics of the tanto whenever it comes in. )It is in another town, I asked some relatives to bring it in.)

what ytour doing is not without historical precedent, a style of Yari called Kikuchi Yari was essentially that, a tanto shaped blade (with longer tang though) on a pole

Really? Awesome! I came up with one idea though. I can put most of the tang on one piece of wood and glue it in. The other I can drill a small hole for the thread and a slightly bigger one for a nut so I can thread the blade in AND use it as a separate tanto. I just wonder the functionality. Any suggestions?

RIght now I am actually making one of these, but instead of a tanto I am using a katana blade, from my old Musahi Wind Dragon that has lost its temper. (And I left it in the rain.... not a good idea)
I am just using a broomstick. Ive sharpened the blade to a wicked point and edge, and I hope to use it when I go gator hunting in a few weeks. Last-ditch weapon, when my bow and gig-arrow fails.

Awesome! I wouldn't mind doing this as well! My tanto looks more like a wakizashi since the blade is like 15" or 16" long!

You can find tempered staves and assorted handles at your local hardware store (Lowe's, Home Depot) in the gardening section.
I would suggest starting with a nice ash or hickory post-hole-digger or wheelbarrow stave, and then shaping it how you please. I used to carve bows out of them, and it is good strong wood.

Sounds awesome! I actually have some hard ash left over from my guitar!

Never mind... My old *** ***** ** grandpa threw it away thinking I was gonna stab someone. God I hate him right now. That thing was my first blade ever!

I have a very dysfunctional family where we all hate each other but somehow still love each other. I guess I mainly said it out of intense anger.

I was just so pissed off at him. He is bossy as semprini. He seems to think he can control everyone. I treasured that tanto. The first sword related object I have ever owned.
