I'm sure there is a perfectly good thread about this somewhere on this site, but I can't find it. Where is the best place to buy white cotton ito? I'm going to wrap a tsuka and I cannot find the color I want, so I was going to try getting some white and try dying it myself. I want a darker shade of green than I am able to find. Also, I am not sure how to do it, i.e. how long to soak it and if it should be repeatedly soaked for better fading resistance, ect. I'd like decent quality and no less than 8mm in width. Also, if any body could tell me why the sky is blue, where do babies come from and if Santa's real then why are all of his return Christmas letters in moms handwriting I'd be grateful.

RID or RIT die, take the grean that is closest and die it with RID die, the longer you kook it the darker it gets.
As to the rest, you need to figure that out your self GrassHopper........ :ugeek:

Thanks SanMarc. Any where I should but the ito from? I've seen it on Swordnarmory, which is where I'm getting the sword, but they don't specify if the ito you can buy is the same found on the existing grip or what mm. it is. I cannot email them because my computer won't do the e-mail service they use. I'll probably end up calling them, but I get so antsy waiting. I know that frankthebunny is working on some of his own ito, so how is that going frank? I'd rather not go though e-bay. Nothing wrong with them, but I'd prefer to go with a real company or person.

"I cannot email them because my computer won't do the e-mail service they use." I just noticed how badly that was phrased. However poorly it was written, I assure you that for some reason when I try to e-mail them it gives me some hassle about my computer not being able to run my Windows Mail, and when I try to set it up it will not do so. Poor grammar is a curse of mine.

Alright, I ponied up my balls and dropped the hammer. I bought the Munetoshi T10 Take. I also purchased 7 feet of their black and white sageo and 15 feet of green silk ito. If the ito is not a green to my liking, I shall purchase a bottle of dark green, or green and black too darken it as I read is what to do, RIT Dye and mess around. I'm going to take a chance on this, and hopefully I won't be back soon begging for one of the REAL grown-ups to fix it. This is my first project, so when I receive the package I'll take some before and after shots. Hopefully I wont fail and have to "LIVE IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!"

I found that the shitodome (brass fittings on the kurikata) are small on the T10 Take, the sageo you have will more then likely not fit. I did the same thing bought a T10 Take+7 feet of brown sageo. Didnt fit.

Thanks chisperoni, they are pretty much the only place I didn't look at and they had exactly what I wanted. Awesome for future projects. That samegawa looks good as well, and is cheap too. Crimsomed, that's a bummer. Hopefully I'll be able to figure something out, but the sageo is nice anyway, and inexpensive.

Every time I've commissioned or done a sageo replacement, the shitodome had to be removed to make it happen. I have no idea how those Chinese tsuka girls manage it. I tried it using the method Tozando shows in their youtube vids, but it just doan' wanna go.
If those shitodome are necessary for you, yer stuck with the original sageo (altho you could tie it differently I suppose).
If you can live without the shitodome, all things are then possible.
My 2 cents.

I actually find most shitodome on most cheaper production katanas pretty ugly. If I cannot fit the sageo through, it's as good as gone. Good call, Maynar.

1. These guys carry a very dark green tsuka ito: www.nihonzashi.com/diy_supplies.aspx2. The sky is blue so we know where to stop mowing. 3. Babies come from buying women jewelry. 4. It's a coincidence. Your Mom doesn't write letters. She's got a Facebook page.

I've used RIT dye a lot (never for ito, but I do a lot of sewing) and you can use it in the washing machine (which is nice - when you manually stir it in a pot you end up with stains all over your hands) - the only thing is you're pretty restricted as to what colours are available. (Instructions for using a washing machine aren't included in the package, but you can find them here www.ritdye.com/dyeing-techniques/washing-machine ) If it's too light though you can always dye it again or put two packages of dye in instead of one, or combine two dyes. (One thing I LOVE RIT dye for is to re-darken my fading blacks. So I use it a lot. )

Thanks Zoe. It wouldn't need to be washed beyond maybe the first time before wrapping. I may just need a darker green than what I have coming. I'm most afraid of dyeing it and then seeing that I've messed up and got uneven coverage. I probably shouldn't sweat it, but I'm really good at so few things, and worrying is one of them.

I mean you can dye it in the washing machine. Of course you can wash it in the machine after, too, if you wanted. I am totally unfamiliar with ito since all my swords are medievals, but as far as my dyeing experience goes when I use the machine I've never had a problem with the dye going on unevenly.
