Since I will be learning to make things in a forge, now all I need is the forge itself!
My dear father suggested that I save some money and just heat the metal in this giant oil burning furnace he intends to buy (which gets hot enough to melt mild steel).
Does it really matter what you use to heat the metal you intend to work?

Yes it does, in a major way. You can use propane, coal, or charcoal. OVERALL the easiest and what you and your father should go with is propane. Or, if you would like look up BushFire Forge, Owen Bush owner/operator/headmaster. He runs a bladesmithing school in the London area, and will no doubt give you first hand knowledge. there will also be of course more than one type of forge at the school you are going to attend, whichever you like best go with that of course.

I don;t have a forge either, and have improvised a variety of methods.
For forging, I have used a huge bonfire, and a "coffe can" forge successfully. Sam, you'll get a kick out of this...I just finished heating and quenching a blade using my fireplace. It is the wood-burning stove type. Sounds silly, i know, but it evenly brought the steel well past critical, so I'm happy. Water quenched it, and tossed it in the oven.

HAhaha beleive it or not a nice low woodfire like that is a very even heat, and very low heat. Often times people using gas forges or whatever will jack up the heat and inevtiably verheat certain parts of they're blades.

Indeed, one of the hardest things about heat treating in my shop is gettinbg the forge to run cold enough. I have to use gas though as I am in a commercial industrial complex.

I doubt I could evenly heat up a longer item in that sort of furnace anyway; it's burner is a very odd shape.
Thanks for the help, guys.
