So I have been training in Iaijutsu for 3 years now and I'm in the market for a new shinken After reading a ton of articles/reviews on this site I really a liking the idea of a titanium one Not just because of the color, but protection against scratches I'm heading to Japan for 3 years and plan on getting a lot of mat cutting in Browsing ebay I see that they have some titanium swords But my first thought is scam, or low qulity However sometimes I find through experts, that ebay can be a treasure trove
What do you guys think?

are you planning on doing any cutting with it kiyone? if so then definately definately do not buy one,it would be worse than useless though titanium aswell as aluminium both have higher strength to weight ratios compared to steel, you would need the sword to be so oversized it would be totally impractical (titanium is a lot more lighter than steel ,so if it was made the same size as a steel sword it would be very weak, its also notoriously difficult to heat treat if its just to practice youre drawing technique, well yeah if you want one i dont practice Iaijutsu myself ,though i suppose if i did personaly id want a steel sword of the same weight and balance of my cutting sword (thats just me though) theres a very good reason that functional swords are made from steel ,in comparing price to performance you just cant beat it

Yeah I'm looking for a new tamishigiri sword The review of the g-1000 on the site didn't seem to mention anything about negatives for cutting I would never practice drawing or kata with a live blade, lol I'll have to start looking around for some nice steel ones, the one that caught my eye on the site was discontinued about the time I decided it was that time of year for a new sword lol

in that case if its for tameshigiri, then most definately avoid titanium like the plague, its only good in the movies theres so many good steel baldes out there which will suit you much better (its deciding what to buy thats the problem)

I think the OP means the titanium coated or infused sword. from what I've read from those who own it, it seems to mostly be a sales gimmick. you would probably do much better with a 1095 or T-10 steel blade and maybe one that comes with a "practitioners polish" as opposed to a mirror polish to better hide the surface scratches. as far as I know they don't make a katana blade completely impervious to scratches

I may be wrong, but isn't it illegal to bring non-Japanese katanas/blades into Japan?

Last I checked, as of 2001 attempting to bring a katana --not an iaito, but a katana-- into Japan will get your blade confiscated at the airport.
If anyone has any updated info, I'd like to see it. Likewise, if the OP is going to a dojo, perhaps the sensei can arrange for something (ie. shipping it).

Absolutely Correct!
I was talking to one of the guys at nihonzashi. (they go to japan every year for training) and they said... You can not bring any kind of steel sword into japan. Even a dull steel sword used as an iaito. The customs agents will use a magnet to check if it's steel. If it sticks you have to either give up the sword or get back on a plane.

And that is why Uma Thurman had to get a katana made once she was inside Japan.

Yeah, Kiyone101. Once you get to Japan, get a hold of Hattori Hanzo and have him make you Japanese Steel. Have him make me one to.

This one wasn't so much going to Japan with as a great US mat cutter or that was my initial plan I have 3 in Japan already and a fourth being made but that red blade looks nice/unique for demos

are you talking about the global gear g-1000 series katana? If so, that blade just has a titanium coating on the blade and is made from differentially hardened 1060 steel. I believe Paul may have done a review on it. Here it is: www.sword-buyers-guide.com/titanium-swords.html

Yeah I read the review, that's what started the whole wanting a new sword lol, it sounds great My questions are the swords on ebay that are like this a scam or pretty decent quality

it probably depends on who the seller is. I know that Global Gear lists things on ebay and you might find them listing one. As far as any other people on ebay, I wouldn't be able to tell you.

To be honest, I don't enough about these sellers to say one way or another. I believe some people on the board have dealt with that seller but I can't recall who they are off of the top of my head. Personally, IF I was going to get a titanium infused sword, I would get the Global Gear one. I have one of their G series swords and it is a very nice blade. I also have heard many good things about that series.

You have already purchased 3 nihonto and have commissioned another, and now you want to buy a cheap beater chinese repo?? If you are someone of such means, why not buy a production sword of higher quality and reputation?
