Just thought I'd make a topic for those who have bought from a store that was on eBay/Amazon or locally that is not a major sword supplier to share our thoughts. This will prevent others from befalling the same bad experiences as you, or reassure them that they can trust the vendor.
I'll start by saying that if you live near Colonial Heights, VA, you should stay away from a store located in Southpark Mall called Exotics. they sell many things, and 99% of the store is overpriced, especially the swords. Most of their swords are props intended for costumes, fantasy play or decoration. The problem is that they sell cheaply made pieces of crap for $100+. I picked up a rapier that was not in a box. When i pulled it out of the sheath, it was obviously a used item and had marks from some idiot trying to sword fight with it .It was stainless steel as well. their price? Around $80. Even new, it would be a wall piece worth around $30. So bottom line, don't buy swords from them. Actually, don't buy anything from them.

Ah, Southpark Mall... Was just there a month or less ago, don't remember seeing Exotics...but then I wasn't really looking. Was a day out with the family, wound up following the nephews around more than anything, between that weird paint store and the jumping whatsit... Only place that really caught my eye was a random set of tables with old newspaper, poster, and magazine prints. Neat stuff there, but I wasn't allowed time to browse. Colonial Heights is just far enough from where I am to not get to go very often...but it's not like I'm missing anything there.

Well here is part of the problem, it is called Overhead, the stores have to pay mass overhead, so Every thing is way overpriced compared to online, You want the best deals, online is the way to go, but if you get a lemon, your stuck most of the time, at the store, you can bring it back, I shop on line, but am very careful where I buy.

I had a pretty good experience at Bonds house of cutlery in Las Vegas. Strangely some things were high and others were low priced. His wall hangers were priced on average and he had a huge selection of kitchen and pocket knives. He even offered to show me how to put a decent edge on one of my knives.
I ordered my swords through KoA because of the hours I work it would be difficult to reach the guy who handled swords through Bonds. edit added: and price.

Ah, I tend to avoid that part of the mall on the rare chance that I happen to go. Virginia Center Commons is much closer to me, though I don't go there often, either... Haven't really done the mall thing in a good many years, since malls haven't really been worth much, at least around me, in well...a good many years.
I've been trying to remember the last time I bought anything at an actual store, but can't. I used to browse booths at gun shows and anime conventions, but they stopped having anything new and/or interesting some time back so I just glance at them when I pass and keep walking...
