Time for my weekly machete review, Up this time is the Fiskars Brush Thinner machete. I got this machete around 2 years ago at Wal-Mart for $ 29.95. I've used it around my place to cut vines, brair bushes, and black berry bushes. It does a real good job on light stuff. It goes with a sharp useable sharp, but I improved the egde on my a little.
The machete comes with a hard plastic carrying case the top has a handle to carry it. there are 2 holes on the back so you can mount the case on a wall. The hole in the blade fits on a stud in the case a lever locks the blade into the case
Blade: length 9in.
thickness 1/8 in
Width 2 3/8in
Steel 1095 ?
Finish gray parkized
Handle Poly
finish half orange/half black
length 10 5/8 in
Overall length 19 5/8 in
The long handle lets you grip near the blade for fine work or out on the end of the handle to power through heavier stuff. The handle flares out at the end to keep the machete from flying out of the hand. The blade tang isn't as long as I would to see. Only 2inches I would like to see a 4 inch tang. The handle is hollow for 8 5/8 inches. There is a large Landyard hole at the end of the handle. The handle is moulded to the tang no rivets holding it on only time and use will tell how long it will hold up.
I like to use this machete for clearing vine tpye matriel and heavy grass stalks. the hook style blade keeps matriel from slipping off the blade. The egde and finish have kept up well through use.
I did do my usaual heavy test cutting with this machete too. The first hardwood sapping was appox 1 3/4in The blade cut 3/4 of the way through then the sapping broke. Not a good smooth cut.
The second sapping was 2 1/2in took 2 heavy blows to get through it. Still it made it through, this is not a machete I would use for heavy cutting, but it can do it if it's all you've got
Pros
Sharp blade ready to go
Heavy thick blade
Finish hold up well
Cons
Tang could be alot longer
Bottom Line A good heavy grass, light limb/sapping and vine cutter.
