You're not going to tell us where you found a scale?!

I did say I had a gauge for measuring trigger pull and that is what I used. I found it in my toolbox I hung it from the tsuba and took measurements from 5 or so different places on it.

I have now added a video to this, of me hacking away at newspaper rolls with this sword and the PPK. It was nice and light to swing but the cutting was easier to do with the heavier PPK

You are Haidong Gumdo practitioner? One thing I noticed is hands placement, your left hand is touching the kashira and is far apart from your right hand. Only a couple of JSA schools do it that way, most place their hands closer together.

yes and have an interest in iaido . When I first started, with wood swords he wanted us to actually have a little of the hand hang over the back edge. I tried it that way for awhile and I didn't like it. So I moved it up a bit. The Nami that I practice with has a shorter tsuka than the PPK. I must hold it with my hand touching the kashira because there is a wear spot on it. He has said before not to have your hand all the way up on the the tsuba.

NO instructor worth the title would teach you to hold any blade with your right hand touching the tsuba...it's simply not done in proper handling. Forget the weight debate, that's irrelevant because this 'quick' blade handles so well. I wonder how Hanwei's HWS-1 steel measures up against K120C Powder; since I only have the 25th & not a powder steel blade, I canot testify yet. Anybody know from hands-on experience? Or, how does Swedish Powder steel rank? What about Hanwei's L6/Banite carbon steel? Would be interesting to pit these blades against each other in tests, if you could afford ($) to really push 'em hard, eh?! However, as my tenshi once told me, any blade is only worth the warrior's skill.

Hey Feathers-nice vid, nice thread-mine weighs in at just a hair under 2.5 Later this month I will have one of the higher end tachi in my hands and will take a good look at both but I dont think a comparision of a kat to a tachi blade is as they say"on the mark" but it will be interesting to me at least.

I can tell you that I've chipped a SPS hanwei blade on green bamboo before, but have yet to chip, ding or roll the edge on my 25th anny shinto after 50 or so cuts.
Considering I've had no formal training, I feel this is a tesimony to hws-1's toughness that it has survived my so-so form!

It has been a while now but I thought I would add to this thread. I was lucky enough to pick up no. 30 when they first came out some years ago. In fact, there used to be a youtube video of my katana on the old SwordNation forum. Sadly both the video and SwordNation are no more. However, when I first received it it wasn't my favourite katana. I really hated the 'Chinese' style tsuba on a Japanese blade. I virtually put it away in storage for the last two years and had almost forgotten about it. Recently a couple of people in another forum expressed an interest in buying this katana from me. I pulled it out of storage and strangely, after a great deal of close examination and handling (taking photos for potential sellers etc.), I have now become truly enamoured by this katana to the point where I am no longer considering selling it. I still don't like that tsuba but this katana is just so - so - so - "elegant". I have been lucky enough to gather many quality katanas over the years (a beautiful Howard Clark L6 Bainite with Patrick Hastings fittings, a Lundemo with ancient Japanese koshirae fitted by Slav, some Nihontos dating back to the 1600's, even a Cheness Oniyuri beatifully fitted out by Slav, and many other magnificent katanas). But this one has now become one of favourites. In fact, it is now progressed to being kept on a stand beside my bed - a position I keep for my most revered katanas. I think if I could find a Japanese silver tsuba that could be fitted to this katana it would be my favourite. If you are lucky enough to own one you would know why. With their light weight (the lightest katana I own) and fast manouverability, this is an exceptional katana. I have no idea how it would stand up to real use. Hopefully, I will never find out. Perhaps in real conditions it would be too light. But if you have the opportunity to pick up one, I highly recommend it.

The shinto is my favorite Hanwei offering by far. I prefer the elite no hi but they are all a pleasure to hold and swing. I still haven't been able to figure out why they can't make a similarly shaped tsuka for any of their other swords, lol

Wow, this is old.... I still have my Shinto but I haven't seen her in a while because of being stored in the closet. Most of my training these days is with my MAS jingum and its fun to read through and see how far apart I used to hold my hands on the tsuka. Nowadays I have my hands much closer together- about two finger widths apart. Reviving this has made me get her out to look at her again.
