What the heck is cold steel the technique? If you go by what this crappy wallhanger company (who seems the ONLY user of this very stupid "pucker steel") cgi.ebay.com/HandForged-FoldedSteel-SanMai-Katana-Sharp-Edge_W0QQitemZ130157384600QQihZ003QQcategoryZ43338QQcmdZViewItemThen it is complete BULL. Mixed iron, 1050 and 1060? What a waste of all three. Mixing steels like that would give you a final carbon content of about 45 or 30 points of carbon. Good for a sword but NOT GOOD with a mix being made by wallhanger companies, way too much chance for an inclusion or faulty weld. they would have done better just using the 1050 or 1060! Also this is eveidence of wallhanger companies trying to produce"folded and forged" WALLHANGERS. Total garbage.

Sam: are they guaranteed SLOs? Or is there some chance that they could be good swords? I know someone who has one and it is beautifully light and well balanced, but haven't actually cut anything with it.

I got to agree with the SLO assessment. The only Kat I've seen by one of these guys(dgspirirt,katana1980, badtrack, ryan) was junk with no heat treat at all.

Bloodwraith, just because someothing is light and well balanced doesn;t mean it is any good. ANYTHING by those people on ebay, GUARENTEED slo. Marc, just beacause something has an HT does not make it anything special either.

A properly heat treated sword, even one with harmonic balance problems is infinitely more useful than a light piece of steel with no HT.

Yeah you said it was an slo and had no heat treat, implying heat treat might make it a real sword. Harmonic balance? you been listening to gus or tinker too much;). It's called balance, and sweet spot, but that's not the point. It ain't all HT, that's all i am trying to say you just seemed to imply like i said that HT would make it instantly a better sword when it would just make it a heat treated slo, i musta misunderstood your post.

OK sam, but have you ever seen a good sword that was not heat treated and tempered?
I think we're all aware that you can't heat treat and temper a crowbar or a bastard file and make it an instantly great sword. Thanks for pointing it out but.

Sam: so what are your requirements for a good sword out of curiousity? I always though it was good steel, good heat treat, good tight assembly and good physics.
