does anyone on the forums have any experience with the gil hibben old west bowie knife :? ,i recently ordered one for my boss who's retiring this year,i do plan on getting some engraving on it ,to commerorate his 40 years at my work place and though it is primerily a display piece for him ,i wanted to know is it any good, im not a big fan of slo's or klo's for that matter and the large stainless blade worries me somewhat,and lets face it most of gil hibbens work is meant for display use only,i just know that he'll end up cutting with it ,and im trying to put my mind at rest that it will at least stand up to some medium cutting/chopping

at that price tag, I would have gone splurge on another knife. The problems I had with it are the : "made in china" engraving 420 Stainless steel I would buff off the engraving; Since it's a display piece, I think you'll be fine; The Alaskan survival hibben is also 420 stainless, and I think it can handle quite a bit; On the other hand, the old west is pretty large and I'm not sure on the size of the tang - or even how the handle is attached. A review over at Amazon might help clarify: " This review is from: Hibben Old West Bowie, Hardwood Handle, Leather Sheath (Misc.) I bought this knife and the expendables bowie they were great when i thought they were full tang but when i called united cutlery to get more info on the knife they told me that the hibben bowies and the expendables bowie are push tang which are half tang and held in with glue . after i found that out and the blade started rattling in the handle my opinion changed very quickly" www.amazon.com/Hibben-Hardwood-H ... addTwoStar The Cold Steel bowies are a bit more pricey, but I think they are a much better than the hibben productions;

thanks for that ghost,i didnt realise it had the made in china standard spiel as to the stainless ,yes thats a bit of a worry,and to be honest id prefer a 6"" blade in 01 tool steel *though he does seem to love big bowie's) ill have to try and get rid of the made in china logo (personally i wouldnt have the knife for myself,but he thinks on the old thats not a knife rule of thumb) i did get a very good deal though $89 which translated to around £60

sorry I just edited in that Amazon review link; you may want to check it out and see whether it is up to par for cutting
