Im planning on stopping by the Tandy Leather Factory tomorrow, and I noticed that they sell snake skin. I was curious to know if anyone knows the properties of snake skin (like durability, strength, stretch, etc), and how it differs from normal veg-tan leather. Wasn't too sure where to post this.

I have used real python skin and from what I've experienced it is pretty thin and does have a little stretch to it. it will stretch more when damp. I haven't tested the durability to any considerable extent though.

The main thing you have to remember with snakeskin is that it's thinner than regular leather, so you have to be a little more gentle with it. If you're not, scales pop off, it can rip, ugly things like that... For aesthetics' sake you might want to use mainly glue rather than stitching it, as well. Otherwise it shouldn't be broadly more different than ordinary leather... oh yeah and it comes in strips rather than hides, for obvious reasons

Thanks for all the info. Yea, I plan to stop by the Tandy Leather Factory today and buy some veg-tan leather, as well as check out their other supplies of goods. It's a 30 minute drive, and I also need to get some other stuff.

an option for the look of snakeskin with the strength of leather would be to get cowhide which is embossed with a snakeskin pattern. there are many animal skin types that can be represented on cow hide like ostrich, snake, lizard, alligator, shark, etc.

^^ That's a good option for, say, sheaths... not so much for grips though as it can be a little rougher than actual snakeskin, but it depends on the quality of what you're buying, of course. It's also a good alternative if you're concerned about the legitimacy of where the snakeskin comes from (endangered species, etc). A company like Tandy is probably reputable enough as far as that kind of thing is concerned, though, so I wouldn't worry too much about their snakeskin. Anyway, good luck with whatever you need it for, and don't forget to show and tell!

Aww, its cute. I wanna pet it. (I love reptiles and other creatures/bugs people deem "evil") Unfortunately they sold out on cobra skins. They were on sale for just $20 for a 4" x 48". Ill check back in a month or so, and see if they have in them in stock then. But besides buying veg-tan leather, I also purchased some stingray skin. They were on sale as well, since they added a giraffe animal print to it. Looks nice tho.
