So guys, I recently finished a new blade, a 25" leafblade, 2.3" wide at base. Here's a pic: Problem is, I'm completely unsure what kind of hilt it should get. I thought maybe a Bristol-like guard, elegant and upward sweeping, and a wheel pommel. Certainly single handed. But then I wanted a quite compact sword and the viking swords keep haunting me, a long, elaborate guard is not what I want. As this is a complete fantasy blade, everything is allowed, it only needs to be light enough, as this blade has a drastic concave distal taper and weighs about 750g. Second problem is this: See the black dents? these are low spots with the scale from hardening still on. The blade originally had a ricasso there and these are the remnants. To deep to be grinded out, so the guard needs to cover them. I'd like to hear your ideas and designs for the hilt. Thanks!!

Quick and dirty--
Celtic style hilt with lobated guard and pommel Gladius; set the blade deep into the guard... think gladius hispanieus Khanjar style grip
You could also use something like what you see sometimes on the yataghan or choora (Turkish short-sword and Afghan dagger, respectively), and use a decoratively cut thin sheet of brass to cover those flaws. Sort of like a habaki, really?
Another notion is to etch the base of the blade with a decorative pattern of some sort.
Really I don't see the problem with using a Bristol style guard, as long as it's got a sufficiently deep escheuton or whatever the term is, to cover the dents. I don't think they look too bad myself... you could do a lot with this blade, though. I look forward to whatever ideas you can come up with!

Celtic hilts for your perusal, incidentally...

And if it's unclear which type I was suggesting you use, I meant the one on the bottom row, fifth in from the right... the one with all the studs and such on it. Note that it overlaps the blade a bit, which would work for you, I think... either that or the first one on the right, that looks like a proto-gladius.

First one on the right, bottom row looks just like the spatha that Del Tin offers. Very attractive piece.

I'm doing something similar and thought doing something like the one at the top left but making the handle out of turned imitation ivory with a flat brass plate at the top. Then attaching a lion head on top of that to hide the nut.

Thanks for all the great advise guys!! I've started to make an upturned guard, we'll see how it turns out, I'm actually quite tempted by a spatha like grip.
Luka, some elvish stuff would be great, got any pics? I only know Sting and that's to popular to copy ;D

i totally agree with the herugrim guard, i think it is one of the most atracktive guards ever, and would cover those gaps nicely.
update, you've already chosen.
