Just thought I'd make an introduction and say hi to the forumites. I've always had a love of swords and swords fighting. No training, but 'sparred' for years with my brother and some friends when we were teens, using rough wooden waster we made or even just sticks or dowels. Even approached a local blacksmith about making a sword and having him show us how, but he was very religious and would not have anything to do with weapons. It all sort of fell to the wayside as time went on, though always watched and loved any films with sword play, fantasy or historical, and played D&D campaigns here and there as well. Its all been rekindled recently and have been looking at the schools in town here giving western martial arts courses and ordered myself an H/T EMSH. Funny how even at this age you can feel like a kid again, waiting for that package to arrive !!

While we welcome you with open arms, I'm afraid your wallet will not. From someone who has been here a year, take it from me... RUN! RUN WHILE YOU CAN! It all starts with buying the first, then you play with it, cut some bottles, have a grand olde time and thing, "Hey, I want another... and another... and another!" Most people here have spouses that keep them in check tho. You could not have picked a better entry arming sword. It's inexpensive enough that if you do somehow manage to break it, it's not that big of a leap to get another. And, for 110 bucks, you are really getting one helluva sword. It has some issues, sure, but the money per sword ratio is very good. Welcome again and I hope you enjoy your stay. Feel free to ask any questions that might come up.

Welcome aboard! It's not the wait for that first sword, it's the wait for a sword, period. They all cause the excitement. And you will find yourself wanting other swords. I don't own an EMSHS but I hear terrific things about them, congratulations on your first purchase, and welcome to the addiction!

Welcome! It really is an addiction though. I bought one H/T, got it, and I was so happy that I now have two more on the way. I'm supposed to be saving for a big backpacking trip! GAH!

MY EMSH came in the mail today. w00t!! As many have said, some small issues, but I'm still grinning ear to ear. Haven't handled any real swords so I can't really comment on its handling or anything, but it feels good to have a real piece of steel in hand and to put it through the little bit of paces that I can in my apt.

You know it all starts quite innocently. The history . . . the romanticism . . . the feel of a well balanced blade in your hand. Then you buy another and you tell yourself it will stop there . . . that you can control this thing . . . and so you get yet another . . . and another. You learn the terminology. You become proficient at proper edge alignment. If you're married, your wife will give you the first clue that something's gone terribly wrong. "Honey, what do we need so much bottled water for?" or "I just got our bank statement in the mail. What happened to all our holiday savings?" You'll lie. We all do. It's when you start naming them that you'll realize it's out of control. The day you run into the living room shouting "Quick! Get the BonAmi! Darla has a rust spot!" that's when it dawns on you. A mere shadow of your former self, you'll find yourself huddling in the corner of the den, surrounded by a sea of blades . . . stroking your Albion and whispering "My Precious!" Anyhow, good to have you!

Sooner or later, you will arrange your kitchen knives according to Oakeshott typology.
Or am I the only one :?

welcome aboard brother just got my EMSHS and I love it! already thinking about the next one, lol try to fight temptation if you like but it's probably a better idea just to give in early and except it. less energy spent this way (which = more for cutting) enjoy!

Thanks for the welcome everyone! Good to be here. You can just call me Johan. Seems that handle was taken when I signed on. J Elder seems so formal, and seeing as the grill is hot and the cooler open, who needs to be formal? lol! It is usually easier just to give in and except it. There will be more in the future for sure. If only there wasn't that pesky need to, you know pay the rent and eat food, then we could all just get any swords we wanted! I don't know if I'll typologycally organise my cuttlery, but I already spend a couple hours a day at least reading up on all facets of the subject online and have bought a couple of books already ... who knows where it will end up? Funny the reactions you get, maybe more so as I am a pretty nonviolent kind of guy, but a lot of people are like, 'you like swords? What? You bought a what?' ....oh well. Its ok, I always liked being different anyway.

Oh Crap!!! Oh Crap!!! I’m doomed. I started with one, then H/T sale, picked up two more, have already named the 1st one, Bruce. I was just about to post “has anyone picked up the new Hanwei 9th Century Saxon SH2436?” On sale for 310.00, that’s only 10 over our limit. I have one Viking, and two Mid Eros. Puts things off balance, should be in pair, yes? Then I can stop with a nice even number… oh wait, I have a “wall hanger”, that’s five, need to even things out, one more “wall hanger”. Then I can stop… But! I would really like something from the Greek-Roman era. Oh boy, it never ends does it? The dog is wearing Viking armor. Shut up, I can quit any time. My 1st post was on Sat Jan 22, 2011 11:32 pm. It’s been all downhill from there. *mumble* *mumble* “one freakn STICKY” *mumble* “warning” *incoherent* ADDICTION!!! Johan, RUN! Run while you still have strength of will. They are all enablers here. It’s too late for me, save yourself. But seriously, has anyone pickup the new Hanwei 9th Century Saxon SH2436? It looks very nice.

Hey, As Sebastien said, glad to have another Montrealer out there ! And you have to take seriously the warnings everyone just gave you. It seems funny.. but the truth is terrifying. Really. You got a Credit card ? If you answered yes then you are doomed. You have a girlfriend ? If you answered yes then prepare for war. You are a rp'er that found its way to real swords... Give me a hug brother, we'll get trough this, but surely not alive. Now... I'll give you a couple of advices... Dont listen to the sword geek Podcast Never go to any of those sites : www.powning.com/jake/home/j_homepg.shtmlwww.christianfletcher.com/Christ ... lcome.html albion-swords.com/ www.odinblades.com/www.fableblades.com/And dont buy the following books : Records of the medieval sword by Edwart Oakshotte Medieval sword in the modern world by Michael ''Tinker'' Pierce ( which sports one of my sword on its cover... just to show off... you'll be compel to do this too : showing off your best swords... its a side effect of the sword addiction syndrome. dont do it. ) Also... never buy an Atrim sword, ever.

Oh I see how it is. You Canada guys going to stick together. Where was all this good advice when I got here? Is this about that Benedict Arnold guy pushing in a little too far north when we had that squabble with England a few years back? Come on man, George made him give it back. If it makes you feel any better, we did hang him.
