Hi guys, (I really don't know where to post this, so I'll just leave it here) Anyone have any idea where to get bright red ito, real silk? I can find blood red and other colors that aren't really red, but not bright red. Help? Should look like this: By the way, the first 2 pics are from: www.couteaux-center.com/boutique ... _fr&num=39 Thanks.

Fred Lohman's calls his Blood Red, but it looks pretty bright to me. If you're not dead set on silk, I think that Cranberry Red Tsunami ito at the top of the page looks rather awesome. www.japanese-swords.com/pages/silk.htm

Thanks Beaumont. I also get the impression it is more oh a bright red than blood color, but I'm wondering why I can't find it in japanese shops like namikawa, etc... It doesn't exist? I'm gonna have to dye it myself...?

Oddly enough red/bright red/blood red ito is surprisingly hard to find, depending on the shade you want on any given day. I was lucky enough to find some cotton ito in a good shade on ebay once, but you certainly can't depend on that on a regular basis. Currently I'm aware of a couple shades on SnA, cranberry chem fiber and blood red in silk, check them out. I just emailed to ask for a couple of samples but haven't heard back yet. Perhaps you'll find a suitable colour there. You know what's even harder to find? Bumblebee yellow. If anyone sees any, let me know.

Lohman's "blood red" ito was more of a plum to me. in this pick you can see the sageo in blood red which before I lacquered the ito, was a direct color match

Whoa... That is not cool. (looks suprisingly nice though, but then again, you're really good)
I try to buy this kind of stuff straight from Japan, since usually the only suprise is the high quality. It just doesn't exist in my regular shops...

An alternative which will give you the colour you want is to dye it with dye for natural fibers. I've done this on several occasions with success. The ito on this sword is blood red ito dyed with scarlet to get the right colour. I've dyed white ito into plum, red brown and dull red, and other colours. It's quite easy to control the colour temperature by adding small amounts of other colours, and simmering colour out if it gets too deep.

So would it be better to dye white ito with a bright red dye or to work from a blood red, burgundy, etc ito?

Yup, I did a test with a white ito and it turned out just a tad darker than the colour you want. A very bright red. I had pics in a post on the old forum, but I can't find it. Ethienne, it's not my design, it's my version of the infamous KI.
