It's a basket-hilted nihon-to.I've seen one before in the old forum some time ago but it was one handed, kinda like a normal basket hilt saber with a Japanese blade.I always thought a basket hilt can do excellent work defending your hand (and you) so why not make a two handed basket hilt (35cm long maybe)and have it act as a shield, one you can hold with both hands and make your blocks more solid.Maybe you could even take a blow there and instantly give a counter since your blade is free as a bird.Sooo yeah,in short, a two handed basket hilt saber.Of course for the standard bushi that would be blasphemy (hence the name) but it would mean so little with his head split in two. Please tell me if I am anywhere near the ball park...or not! Sounds pretty interesting. Your picture is messed up though. Looks like the forum butchered the link.

It is. Love that thing.
Yeah, don't know what was happening with the link last night, but it works now. Cool looking blade. It would be pretty interesting to see how it handles.

And here's a crappy prop: s194.photobucket.com/albums/z240 ... =guard.jpg Just humor me,I made it from cardboard and wire while watching a movie and eating at the same time.I just threw it together to stick on my CS boken and see if it gets in the way when I bend my wrists, and it doesn't,so it's all cool.I know it looks nothing like the drawing,it looks more like a triple D guard rather than an actual basket hilt. But if it was made from 3 serious spring steel bars it would be good enough, maybe even better since the springiness of them would even take away a big part of the blow. It's kinda ugly that way but I wouldn't even have to actually fit the thing,I could just make a couple of holes on top (two black spots in the second photo)and one on the bottom and screw it on the tsuba and pommel (also made with holes where needed) every time I want it on.I am willing to bet on how handy it would be to not have to block stuff with your blade anymore.Right? That would make for some sad/angry bushi out there.
