I know that USPS is not a member here but I feel that the members here should be warned. Out of seven recent dealings with them, five have gone bad. They are as follows:
1: Wakizashi shipped to a member arrived with box nearly torn in half.
2: Money order never reached its destination.
3: Sword shipped to me has not reached its destination and is 'lost' in USPS's system.
4: Saya shipped to customer was marked as 'delivered' but was never recieved.
5: Ito (what the money order was supposed to pay for) never arrived; got an empty envelope in a sleeve with a sticker marked 'received without contents'.
So, unless I absolutely must ship internationally, I will be using UPS or FedEx from now on. I've had enough, and I've been too sick to go to the post office and find out what the hell's been going on recently. This has all been within the last month. USPS, I'm done.
I will post some photos of the empty envelope once I'm feeling up to taking them (addresses blurred, of course).

I've had some issues with the Post Office of late as well. They have supposedly delivered things to me that never showed up at all. Plus it's almost as expensive as UPS is. For the last couple of years if I have to send something, I always use UPS. At least they seem to be more reliable and they automatically provide up to $100 in insurance.

I actually haven't had much issue with them lately, but that may just be because my recent shipping has all been from one big logistical hub to another. When I was living in downstate IL stuff took like two weeks to show up. My issues have been more with FedEx as I live in an apartment, they don't leave a sticker on the building's front door like UPS does and management usually "forgets" to tell anyone they got a FedEx package. And their tracking numbers only work like about half the time.
The haggler in me is going to regret mentioning this but if I buy something "shipping included" from one of you guys and you were planning on shipping USPS to save money, I'd be willing to chip in an extra buck or two to help cover the difference for UPS iff you're more comfortable doing it that way.

I have had pretty bad experiences with them.
1. Amazon order a while back got lost for 3 months...Amazon just went ahead and sent me a replacement 2. Evil's Bane sword tip got rolled and was exposed by them...even though it was wrapped properly. 3. Black Asp I got last Monday, tip got rolled as well (first 3 mm)
2 and 3 , both packages very very battered beyond belief. What happened? It certainly looks like someone dropped / tossed them 10 ft....
I trust UPS a bit more...but Chris over at Scorpions says UPS has broken his bows a lot.

Never had any trouble with them. The only mess up in shipping lately, was a customs problem. Then again, I usually end up going through two services to get my stuff over here.

The USPS has always been my first choice for shipping. I have found that packages arrive in better condition than with either UPS or FedEx. The quality of service received from any shipper can vary by location. I live in a rural area, USPS and UPS never have any trouble making a delivery, but FedEx routinely returns packages here claiming they couldn't find the address. Midori, the number and type of problems you have had in such a short period of time, suggests to me that there may be something more than just incompetence at your local post office, it may be criminal. You should contact the USPS Office of Inspector General. Here is alink to the website www.uspsoig.gov/hotline.htm.

I don't know what it is, but within the lower 48 I see a lot of complaints about USPS. If I experienced that I'd be inclined to prefer UPS as well.
But here in Canada it's a different story. Every shipment I've recieved via postal service from the US (private or commercial sender) has arrived in perfect condition, without fail. The rates are the best available (UPS bends us over the igloo every time) and delivery is in 14 days or less (we get used to that aspect).
I have no idea why this happens. All I know is trial and error has taught me that shipping from the US to Canada, USPS is the only way to go.
Go figure *shrugs*

Yes, I've had very little trouble with them internationally, and I'm wondering if this is because of our local post office? I never had any problems with them until I moved here, and I'm not exactly in the best of neighborhoods. I believe I'll take your advice sol, because this is getting beyond ridiculous. Thanks for the link. ^ ^

I have had so many issues with USPS losing/damaging my shipments that I simply won't ship via them unless someone specifically requests that I do.

Hey Midori, sorry again you never got your Ito :? I've never had a problem with USPS until recently but at the rate they are hemorrhaging money it doesn't really surprise me. Gonna have to go ups from now on I guess.

I would like to put my $0.02 in here. I have received alot of packages over the past 8 months sent from the US of A. These items ranged from Swords, Arrows, Bows (longbows and compound bows), clothes, stickers and electronics.
ALL of my items showed up here in Canada within a REASONABLE amount of time and were all in prime condition, I only had 1 minor issue, I had an envelope that looked like it had been dropped in a puddle which was probably my local Canadian Postal service's fault, my goods weren't damaged though.
So please Americans, don't NOT ship to Canada because you don't trust your postal system just make sure you get the payee to get the insurance with it. Cause shipping UPS, FedEx, DHL is friggin expensive for Canadians to receive (dam brokerage charges....)

I have bought/sold/traded hundreds of swords in the last 5 years... and untold sword parts..... Never had a single issue...
Only issue I've EVER had with USPS is a lost pair of sunglasses going back to Bolle to be fixed.

I have used USPS for years for shipping hundreds of items, majority of which are computer parts. I have never had a single issue with them. Worst thing that happened was a priority package took a week instead of 2-3 days. Odd that 5 out of 7 for you have gone bad and 0 out of 300+ have gone bad for me.

Like I said, this has all been recent. I never had a problem with them until we moved.
It's okay, SG. Not blaming you in the least. I'm sorry you never got that money order. >< And I swear if I see that ito walking around on a pair of shoes, I'm gonna kick the wearer's teeth in.

I personnaly never had any problems with USPS. However, all my dealings with this shipping company was about shipments going between me and north-eastern states/provinces. So, I think something is very wrong with the USPS staff near your home Midori.
Staying away from them and dropping a adequately-but-strongly-worded message to their general inspector would help, IMO.
JUst my two cents on that.

I know thats what I thought. My heart dropped into my stomach when i saw the box. i carried it up stairs and was afraid to open it. I got it open and the wakizashi was still wrapped in the bubble wrap and sageo tied up around the tsuka. i relaxed when i pulled it out of the saya to see the blade good and straight.

Well over a hundred packages shipped and never had one single issue. A number of those packages were cash and jewelry overnighted. Every single method of delivery has its horror stories, so I don't think there is any getting around the fluke occurrences. More often than not though, I think it has more to do with people being careless in packaging and using delivery companies as an excuse or cover for poor service and broken promises.

I know if I ship anything to Canada I use usps, But anything in the lower 48 I wont use anything but UPS, I trust it, I can track it, and know when and where it is, was, and is going to be.
