Ok, so long story short, I was at this guys house and I noticed a sword on the wall. I'm like "Hey, you mind if I look at that." He's like, "Sure." So I ask if I can take it home and take some photos of it to see if my fellow sword enthusiasts might know something about it. Here it is. Side note: I'm posting the thumbnails as the pics were 3Mb each. They are taken at high resolution, I just wanted to avoid The long load times. But I'll keep the first pic max rez. So, there are some engravings. The only ones that I can make out is one of an Indian holding a tomohawk, and another that looks like the standard american eagle pose, with some branches above him. So anyone have any idea where this is from? The fella whom I'm borrowing it from said that he heard that it was given/recieved/worn during a peace treaty somewhere, but he's not sure. After hearing that, I didn't expect that the blade would show signs of use, but the edge definitely has some nicks in it. Also, it would appear that the edge has been sharpened by someone that knew what they were doing. There is almost a perfect appleseed edge starting 1/4 of the way up the blade all the way to the tip. The patina shows that it was done before any patina had shown up. I REALLY like the feel of this blade, and if I could figure out what it is, perhaps I might go shopping for a repro.

Was getting ready to go to work and just caught this. Older than the Civil War. The motifs strike me as federalist looking. Sword has the frame of an English M1821 pipeback.
Don't have time to puzzle the etchings. Wouldn't be surprised if it was a presentation sword for an occasion...

Yeah, it does look like a dress-up sword for some shindig. It could have been *used* in the Civil War, specially if it's been sharpened, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it was made before. It's in pretty good condition, so I hazard that it was kept up by some family or other before being sold. Any chance you can look into that through whoever your friend got it from?

Those are some really interesting etchings...almost definitely not Civil War. And I agree on its purpose, it strikes me as a bit posh for anything but a dress sword for either a special event or a high ranking officer.
Very attractive piece--love to hear more about it.

Greg,
I would put this up on SFI. Just for additional eyes, they tend to have a lot of resources as well.
