I'm a pretty big guy, so I like the two-handers. When I want to get my blade speed up, I'll swing it one-handed. There's nothing like hearing that satisfying "pock!" as you liberate an evil pumpkin from the top half of his head.

The more I use swords, the more I like the single handers better.
I think this is largely due to the type of target I am putting the sword to. Physics tells me that I should be getting more powerful cuts from a 2-hander. But up against water bottles, a 2 hander, or at least a 2 handed grip, seems awkward. This is probably because I have to worry about stopping that much weight in the first place.
But single handers would probably stay at the top of my list even if I were in a situation where I had to use a sword. (Time travel, zombies, time traveling zombies, etc etc) Single handers just offer more options when it comes to what you are doing with your other hand. If need be (and assuming you didn't have a razor's edge) you could half sword and put 2 handed strength behind your single handed sword.

Depends on various circumstances, and also on what mood I happen to be in.
Ideally, I'd prefer a sword that can be wielded in either one or two hands. I wouldn't say I have a real preference for bastard swords, though, so put me up for No Particular Preference for now.

Either one-hander and shield or a hand and a half, two handed is a bit awkward for me, probably has something to do with the fact that I'm not that big myself. all things combined I lean more towards one and a half both because that is the type I have most experience with and because of pure aesthetics.

For those newer to the sharp to very sharp sword, and cutting with it, I believe a two hander or a bastard sword is preferable. A one hander allows a longer and more uncontrolled cut which is more likely to result in injury (mainly, I think, to the leg area). A two handed grip, in and of itself, prevents much "overcutting". I'm not sure I have expressed this well, but if you try fast, hard swinging one handed and two handed I believe you will see what I mean.

I'm with Templar on his reasoning.
I like bastards and two handers, because with a single hander I scare myself

Anyone who can survive in the hometown of Rufus the two headed circus pig, not to mention "the goat capitol of the midwest" is scared of very little I think.
