What's your preference between a single handed or a two handed sword? Give details and explain your reasoning. Any type from any place/time is up for debate. Are their times you prefer one over the other or do you always have a favourite? Edit/add: I added the bastard option to the poll. Didn't think of it until replies came in

I prefer a bastard sword that is biased towards two handed use, personally, so I thought that fit in with 2-handed best. I prefer the control that a second hand gives the user, along iwht the added power. I guess my main bias coems fro mthe fact that all throughout my childhood I 'sword-fought' (plastic lightsabers, sticks, etc) 2-handed, because I had no shield and the second hand might as well be helping, lol. So by the time I ever picked up a real sword, I was already quite used to wielded a 2-handed weapon, but had little to no experience with single handed techniques. I'm getting more and more used to one-handers, and I do like them a LOT, but my true comfort zone rests well into two handed territory. That being said... in a fight, I think sword&shield is truely a dominating style that would be incredibly hard to beat with a two handed sword. For fun, and for cutting, longswords are my thing, but if I had to duel someone, I'd trade it in for my single-hander Atrim and a shield. HTH. -Slayer

Do two hand and a half swords equal one three hander? I voted three because there is no "other" option. All have their values really. So, I should have really clicked no preference.

One handers. I've had enough experience with sport fencing to simply prefer them slightly.

I have done martial arts with both two handed (german longsword, iaido, kendo, etc.) and one handed (sport fencing, kali/escrima, etc.) so I put no preference. It really depends on the situation for me. There are distinct advantages to both.

Bastard sword for me. I have large hands and the grips for a lot of one handed swords are really uncomfortable to use. Bastard swords give me plenty of room to use one handed plus I can always get the first 2 fingers and thumb of my off hand on it if I need the extra control.
If I actually had to fight someone, I'd prefer to use a Spear and shield with a gladius or large kukri for in close.

Sorry guys- I didn't know editing the OP and poll would delete past votes. Makes sense now but too late. Whoops

Gimme the biggest, meanest, most roided-out two-hander you can find. Something that people will look at and say "Now HE'S definitely compensating for something..."

I don't have enough hands on experience to make a sound judgement based on usage, but aesthetically, I like longswords best, so I voted hand-and-a-half. I also have a soft spot for big, flamboyant two-handers, though. (And no, I'm not compensating)

I have only owned a one hander and a bastard and to me the bastard is a little awkward to cut with and I like my one hander a whole lot better. So I put one hander. However as I get more and more experience with different sword that may change. However for now I love a good ole one hander.

I have a VA Kreig and had a DSA one hander (and have used a Tinker EMSH quite a bit), But my vote goes to 2 handed swords (though I do want a VA Crusader). I just feel more *powerful* with a 2 handed then I do with a single handed. Maybe if I carried a shield around while using a 1 hander then I wouldn't feel so goofy holding my hand behind my back (for fear of accidentally loping it off) @ Sneakypete- Something like this?

I prefer hand and 1/2 swords, it allows for sword and shield and then as your shield deteriorates in combat you can discard your shield and switch to a two hand grip. By that time you're probaly tiring out and need both hands on your sword.
I also happen to like the estetics better, the profile taper parallel until the last 1/3 of the blade and a POB around 4", all indicative of a hand and a 1/2.

Single handers are my preferred sword type. I have more training with them, and I like having either a shield or another single handed sword in my left hand when I fight. I have no real trouble using two handed or hand and a half swords but I just like the way single handed ones feel best.

One-handers, all the way, for me. I have very minimal experience with both two-handers and one-handers and I simply like the feel of the one-handers much more. I'm not really overly fond of true two-handers (longswords, claymores, katana (this last one is more ambiguous for me since the hilt can be short enough, historically, that it's actually a hand-and-a-half) because they feel awkward to me; a bastard sword, on the other hand, would be the next best thing to a one-hander, in my book, since you get the speed and comfort of a one-hander with the power of a two-hander.

I'd have to say Bastard here for the versatility though I'm starting to really like single-handers. I own more hand and a half blades than anything else.

I'll use anything that can be used within the German system so I have no preference. Much of my experience is with Longswords though. Pretty, pretty longswords...
Actually Slayer, outside of a shield wall you'll be at a disadvantage with a full sized shield against someone with a two handed sword. The guy with the two-handed sword can move his point much faster than you can.

Sword and buckler is very versatile though. Speaking of which, I need to purchase a buckler sometime.

I like hand and a half swords...paired with a small shield or a buckler. Course I like hand and a half swords that are more easily managed in one hand like say the albion crecy or the HT bastard sword.

I love sword and buckler though I haven't done much of it. I should've said "sword and buckler for duelling and street fighting and a large shield for war and the shield wall."
