Hi guys My name is George. Anyway, im heaps in to Anime mainly Bleach and after buying a Katana off ebay from the show it sparked my interest. Turns out i got a decent (non stainless, some what sharpened and wont fall appart) sword too. Full tang, 1045 carbon. Of course ive seen the cheapos and this wasn't one. So then the curiosity took over and somehow found this site. I am in the process of ordering a SBG custom Katana, simply cause i wanted a really good sword but with everything i wanted. So custom was the choice. (Must have read every Katana review atleast 2-3 times!) I have a background in Martial Arts and also Ninjitsu but this was many years ago. Im currently starting to learn Iaido, and my intrest in the whole history or Japan and the warrior has enveloped me like a plague! So for my questions. Has anyone brought or can recommend these swords? myworld.ebay.com.au/katana1980/Im looking at getting a custom Wakizashi from them, just to match my Katana (on order from here soon) and Hanwei Tanto i have. When i started wanting to custom make my sword i first wanted the most traditional, closest to a real Samurai sword from 300 years ago i could get for around $300 - $400. I have since decide to go with what i want for my 1st REAL sword. Anyway the question is, does anyone know where you can find pictures or info on the OLD traditional swords. Like what sorta Tsuba designs did they have? What colour combos were the Ito (and what was it exactly) and rayskin. See i want a modern sword but to look and to be made traditionally. But heres the hard part i also want it to be fully functional and also as strong as it could be with modern day steels. Of course i dont wanna pay 1000's of dollars either. :?

Oh and another question!
My grandfather collected all sorts or swords. I now have them and its a fair collection, but have no idea where they are from and if they are worth anything?
Does anyone know someone who could help me finding what they are and if they are real genuine swords or knock offs he has picked up around the place.
Ive got 2 that look Turkish, 2 cavalry looking ones, a roman looking type and some other ones i cant remember atm.

welcome! Good that you're taking interest in learning the way of the sword. a good number of us here do study sword arts in some form or another. ebay can be hit or miss. I only purchased one thing from there and i got a good deal. my Hanwei Nami iaito. I'm currently awaiting an SBG custom katana myself. i cant wait. Take pictures of your collection.we like pictures. and it would help with identifying them. Im no use in this dept but others will help you.

Ok i will definatly get as many pics as i can. Keep in mind tho some are a bit, ill use the word 'rustic' for a better term.
I was asking about the ebay seller cause i was looking for just an ordinary sword for Iaido ONLY. I dont wanna pay high prices for a 'training' blade. But knowing what i know now, to train with a blade that isnt balanced or weighted or will become loose over time is just going to be a waste of money.

Welcome to SBG George, Looks like some pretty interesting blades you have there. Sorry I cannot help you much in identifying them. I'm a bit of a noob myself when it comes to swords. Anyway, for some info and pictures on Japanese swords here are a couple that I have come across www.japanese-koshirae.com/ The navigation on this site is appalling but he does have a lot of pictures of antique and traditional koshirae. You may have to hunt around at little. I also take a look from time to time on some of the sites selling ninhonto. These two for example: www.nihonto.com.au/www.ricecracker.com/I've also got this link on a brief history of koshirae. It also has some links to various tsuba designs. www.arscives.com/historysteel/japanesekoshirae.article.htmHope that this is of some help to you. I know I have seen some better than this. Wait a moment world.choshuya.co.jp/index.htm You can get lost on this site, huge amount of material. Hope this is of some help enabling you with your addiction. MT

First sword is a french artillery briquet (short sword/side sword). mid 19th Century.
Second one is a generic tulwar design that could have come from any mid oriental country.
Third one looks home made. Could be east african.
4th is a Japanese type 32 1890s sword.
5th is a british infantry officer 1845 pipe back. (not very good shape I'm afraid.)

Hello Joe
I have seen swords like that first one earlier. This model was first made by France in the early 19th century. It was made for artillery officers, if my memory is right. The design was supposed to imitate those good old gladius from the roman antiquity. The design was also copied by Russia (who got plenty of copies when Napoleon's army gtfo of Russia) and by the USA, all between 1800 and 1850. These swords were known as heavy, cumbersome blades. Some sword sellers sell replicas of these, even today.
That second sword seems like a middle-eastern saber, it looks like an indian talwar (or maybe it is tulwar ?).
Take these infos with a pinch of salt, my knowledge is limited.

The second one is indeed a talwar/tulwar (different transliterations for the same thing, so use whichever). As far as I know, they're the only sword in existence that has that disc-hilt construction, so they're pretty easy to identify.
The third is a Burmese dha (also known as a Thai krabi or a Malaysian pedang). A contemporary version would be Hanwei's Banshee.
As for the rest, trust Dave on this one; he knows his military swords.

VD got it right on the Burmese dha. Went back to a J Withers index and found it after the NFC Div game.

And LOL no wonder im so into Katanas now, the Japanese infantry sword was always my favourite. Got it for my 18th bday (got to choose one out of the whole collection)
There were alot more swords. But they have been split up with my siblings and some were stolen, about 10 years ago when my grandfather still had them.
