Hi, As I mentioned in my introduction post I'm new to collecting swords. I have a history of non-armed martial arts and collecting pocket knives. I have reasonably strenght in my body and arms and while not very big have a broad build. I think I prefer big and heavy blades, but because I have no experience this could be wrong, they just "seem" right for me. My plan is to start out with a few katana untill I get a feel for them, and then later to venture into Euro swords. I'd like to take it step by step and learn about each piece/type I get before moving on. After reading almost all of the reviews and a lot of helpfull posts I decided that I will start with something really cheap, just to get the hang of it. I want something that I can take apart and put back together multiple times without fear of ruining a good sword, and something I can cut with in the backyard that would not leave me feelign guilty for bad cuts and ant damage in the learning process. As far as I can tell from reviews and posts, the Musashi Bamboo seems like a good starting katana ; www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... +Blue+Saya Personally I do have a preference for this one, based on looks alone ; www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... ior+Katana So do any of you have any tips or ideas? Is there a big difference between both swords? I am completely wrong and should buy something else? Thanks for the help! Flor

Either would suit your purposes just fine, the Bamboo having the advantage of not being back-ordered. I own several Musashis from this line including the Bamboo, and the newer ones come with alternating wrap. Both have real hamon from the pics, I know for sure the Bamboo does. Everyone says these are light cutters and they are, but double rolled beach mats cut just fine for me. I wouldn't go for anything heavier, target-wise. Plastic bottles, milk jugs and mats should give some great backyard fun and exercise. Good luck, and welcome!

I'm pretty sure they are the same sword other than the saya color. when I bought mine it was labeled "bamboo warrior" it should be a great sword to practice with and can be taken apart although you shouldn't really do it often unless you have to. for the price, I don't think you will find better. also, if you like red instead of blue, just scuff the paint and recolor with a can of red spray paint. no need for traditional Japanese lacquer and all that. rustoleum is good enough for outdoor furniture and is good enough for a good color change on a saya.

Thanks for the replies.
I will order the Bamboo tomorrow, since it is not back ordered as you say. (The wait will be long enough to Belgium!) Frank, thank you for the tip. I will wait until I have the saya in my hands, and if I do not like it I will take out the garden paint!
Thanks!
