So, I now have a lot of swords. This is a fantastic thing! But, my fiancee does not think that swords a great decorators item. Actually, she and I are really into antiques, and she is letting me keep a few antiques in the living room, plus I will hang my favorite swords in the study. I don't really want to display 25 swords, especially some of my beat up cutters and stuff. Just a few will be great. But, now what do I do with the rest (and don't say give them to you, because that's not happening .) I have thought about rifle cases, but that poses some problems - like complex hilts and longer blades. So, do any of you store your swords not on the walls? How do you do so?

I'm still unclear as to you intent. I think your asking how to put them discreetly up and out of sight. nez pas? You can look at my use of oriental rack units; but that doesn't appear to be your intent. Hanwei makes some good sword bags in S,M,L that take about any longsword or less.
Swords in central air environments will do very well with a couple of oil and clean checks a year. Moisture is the primary enemy.

I keep mine in my dry basement workshop when I'm working on them.

Well Dave, you essentially have an annex for your swords, which is lovely, but I can quite do that...
I hadn't thought about the Hanwei sword bags, those might be good to keep them in. But I figured I should keep them separate from their scabbards...
As for my intentions, I was just wondering how everyone else does it. Thanks for the info JP, but I don't have a workshop, unfortunately.....

where do you keep them now? how much room can you set aside in your home? I have lived in several different homes with my swords. I have had them in closets, on walls, on work-benches, in random corners, and on bookshelves, just to name a few. how you store them is going to depend a lot on how much space you have and in what kind of room.

Well Tom, I get what you are saying, I would mostly like to keep them all in the same place (i.e. under a couch or in a closet). I don't have much space, but enough. I am really liking the hanwei sword bags though, especially since they have the divisions in them for different swords. Might be a good choice.

FRONT DOOR CLOSET! (if you have one). The next time you have company, just discreetly point them to "feel free to hang their jackets in the closet.", best look on peoples faces ever . I did that in my last house, and right beside it I had a book case with the following books (paraphrasing it too here) on it. "Knots & Rigging's", "Book of poisons", "History of Executions", "Cannibalism through the ages", "Canada's Serial Killers", "Joy of Cooking". Best part was, our Landlord was trying to sell the house then and had Realtor's bringing people through all the time. Again, BEST looks on peoples faces! On a more serious note: What about a LARGE hockey style bag and wrapping most of them up and storing them in there?

Idea: If you're not averse to keeping them in the bedroom, and your bed is high enough, you could purchase one of those boxes made by Rubbermaid or Sterilite that slide underneath. They're normally for sheets and such, but they're pretty sizeable, some of them are around 5' long and should fit a bunch of swords. You could even use sheets to pad between them-- multi-using!

I generally store mine in a rubbermaid tote or in a chest. I also wrap the blades in slightly oily cloths to help prevent rusting. it work pretty well as I have stored swords for 4+ years this way with no rusting.
