Trying to diversify my collection again. I am starting to like Scottish blades, specifically pre-modern period. I am thinking about getting one of these two blades: -Hanwei Scottish Basket Hilt Broadsword : www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2002&name=Hanwei+Scottish+Basket+Hilt+Broadsword-Hanwei Scottish Basket Hilt Backsword : www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2003&name=Hanwei+Scottish+Basket+Hilt+BackswordBeside the difference of one single edge versus double edge, I also noticed a weight difference. The Broadsword is listed as 3 lbs 1 oz, much heavier. The Backsword is listed as 2 lb 9 oz. I like the look of the Broadsword better but I never own a sword that weight more than 2.8 lbs before. So I am a little hesistant in getting the Broadsword. Does anyone here has experience owning either of the two swords. Please describe the balance and hande of the blade you own. Thank in advance.

I live in a mostly Scottish community, so I've handled a fair number of baskethilts at Highland Games.
The basket is most of the weight, therefore it would feel very hilt heavy. If you've ever handled the hanwei sidesword, if feels similar, though with greater cutting power.

Some time ago, I asked questions on the Broadsword (albeit the antiqued version) and the answers I received on it seemed somewhat subjective. Here's the link so you can read for yourself: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=557

The backsword is the better of the two. The broadsword wheight is is over 3 lb. with a POB of over 4". For a single handed sword that is not going to handle well.

I own the broadsword (antiqued) and, while quite good looking, the p.o.b. is farther down the blade than it should be and so, it is tip heavy. It really feels like a heavy sword but after handling it a while it can become manageable...no fast recovery with this one though...oh, and the rayskin handle wrap is a bit rough on the hands. But, from what I gather reading around and IMO, it is probably the most accurate basket-hilt around in our price point...Most reviews and opinions I've read said, and like Razor mentioned, that the backsword had better handling properties than the broadsword. p.s.: last I looked on the Cas Hanwei website, the scottish basket-hilts (apart from the practical) were there no more...discontinued???
edited to add: don't get me wrong, I still really like my basket-hilt! It just isn't as nimble as others...
