I just had a quick question about importing swords and customs in Australia (NSW in particular)
I'm looking to buy my next sword from the KultofAthena or Trueswords next time, and that means i would have to get it shipped from O/seas to Australia. Has anyone on here from AUS, had any trouble purchasing from overseas to get their swords?
(Sorry if this has been answered before, but i couldn't find any info relating to AUS in search)
Many Thanks.

I have recently received a sword I imported from overseas. (Purchased through Sword n Armory in fact) and it actually took longer to leaver the US than it did to clear customs in Australia (about 24 hours to clear customs with 3-5 days sitting at US airport). I believe that the current import laws do not prohibit the importation of swords into Australia (for the moment), but there may be some local State laws that would need to be adhered to first. EG. I beleive in Victoria you need to have a permit/license to purchase any blade weapon. This is a link to the Australian customs restricted weapons list www.customs.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/Import_BladedWeapons.pdf. While I think it still may be possible to purchase items on this list, you need a shirt load of paperwork, patience and dollars to do it. Also keep in mind that if the value of the imported item/items in each shipment is under $1000AUS you won't/shouldn't need to pay import duties or GST. Importing at the moment into Australia is probably the best option due to the strong Aussie dollar. You have access to greater ranges of blades at highly competitive pricing. As long as you don't mind the 3-4 week wait for delivery  . I hope I have covered your questions. If you need any other info, just ask, more than happy to help. MT

Thanks for the info MT! It seems to me after reading the customs pdf, that they are more interested in controlling concealable and short weapons. They have a bit where daggers is: "excludes traditional long swords etc" So it sounds like it should be fine for now. Hopefully we won't become even more of a nanny state, and lose the right to import proper swords.
Cheers.

Only happy to help.
Restrictions on shorter blades is still annoying though. I'd like acquire a tanto and possibly a Higonakami or two (just for interest value) at some point. But, the import restrictions mean that either you can't import them yourself without a lot of red tape or have to purchase from a local dealer at 3 to 4 times the price of anywhere else in the world  .
MT
PS Let us know what blade you choose from Kult of Athena.

Hey Apar83, I was going to chirp in but MT has covered all the bases, as a rule postage and customs will add a quarter of the value to the price of your sword if you go over $1000 sometimes up to a third. and be sure to ask postage first as it is not unknown for UPS to charge up to $250 for a larger parcel.

Yeah I'd like to get some cabers, daggers and axes as well, but no such luck.. I should be right for customs as I'm not going to spend $1000 on a sword at this stage. Maybe later later on down the track i might get one of those high end ones, but I'm happy with the more economical cutters for now.

G'Day, newbie Aussie here from NSW . Thanks for this topic, as it answers some of the questions I'd been wondering about. I've just recieved, from KoA this morning, the Hanwei Mammen Axe I'd ordered early this month - excellent service I'm hoping to order one or two swords from KoA shortly. My question is this..I'm hoping to order them with sharpened blades. Has anyone here had problems with Customs in bringing in a sharpened blade into Australia, NSW in particular ??

There is no difference for either Customs or NSWPOL if the swords are sharpened.

I think as far as customs go, they are all classed as sharp, but I have never had it mentioned normally customs are just holding their hand out wanting money.

You shouldn't have any trouble as long as you aren't in Victoria. Our import laws have just recently changed to include 'daggers' and throwing knives, but swords are still fine. In NSW you can't own star-shaped shuriken or other multi-pointed throwing weapons, and a few other things, but actual, regular swords are no problem.
Anybody living in Victoria should apply for a police exemption though. While I lived in Melbourne I was a member of the AKC, but shortly after I moved away they stopped covering swords because apparently too many people were joining that weren't "true knife enthusiasts" but just sword collectors. Us darn sword-collectors! This is why I'm glad to live in QLD. Moving back to Melbourne soonish though, gonna have to get one of those exemptions myself...

Well, guns are very hard to obtain in most places in Australia, so most criminals turn to other weapons for muggings, breakins, random murders and such. Knife-crime's high in Victoria, so they banned pretty much every weapon. Curiously, banning maces, flails, swords, spears, battleaxes, daggers and the like hasn't really brought the whole 'killed in the face with a kitchen-knife/cleaver' rate down. I wonder why...

That's great, lets just give ol Burglar-san an edge, by banning all those weapons the only ones left to have them are the criminals, which is why I sleep with a loaded Springfield Omega 10mm Auto on my night stand.

Yeah It's very very restrictive here. I've also been wanting to get into shooting for a while as well, but the costs and waiting times seem quite overwhelming. you can only get certain caliber handguns with a maximum bullet capacity. Also if you want to physically keep the firearm at home, you must have an approved safe which you have to keep the gun unloaded and locked away in.

Bureaucracies, I will never understand them. Here in Tennessee(not every state mind you) you can own as many firearms as you want, trade, sell, whatever. I own a Bulgarian AK-74 and a Romanian M-44 Mosin Nagant Carbine. Hell, they have gun shows here where you can buy a weapon on the spot from a dealer and they just send off for a instant background check with the FBI(a.k.a. Insta-Check), nothing against you pops up , you go home with your new baby(how I got my AK). If you ever come state side, I'll take ya to go equalize some targets. Those laws sound alot like Washington DC or Chicago's laws. So wait a sec, if you purchase one you can't even keep it at home with a loaded mag in the safe? I can see it now,"HEY YOU, DON'T MOVE!!! I'm going to open my safe, retrieve my firearm and run to the garage and get the ammo, and when I get back you're in REAL trouble mister!"

AND JUST FOR THE RECORD! I'm not dogging on anyone's country nor badmouthing them, I'm just saying the people whom create the laws probably had the best intentions it just sucks for the people who want a means to defend themselves. That's all I'm saying...

I agree, but it won't likely change here for a very long time, or at all unfortunately. Luckily Most of the gun crime that occurs, is usually criminals shooting each other and their friends, but sometimes innocent people get caught in the crossfire. Bashings and stabbings are the big ones here. (But we are still suppressed against doing anything about it) But hey if I'm ever heading to the states in the future, I'll be sure to PM you about having a go at the range, shooting over there.

It sux here man, im in NSW (Aus) and we cant have any fun. Everything is illegal, which basically makes more crime. Like i can get a handgun (illegaly) REALLY easy yet if i try and get one properly, i first have to get a licence, then join a club, then store the gun at the club. semprini that, im not gonna kill, threaten or hurt anyone or anything in any way. So why cant i own one? I used to love going shooting with my dad and i was always very safe and cautious. They are trying to 'prevent' crime but if u want to hurt somone, go to the kitchen and Da-da wow a whole draw full of knives!!!
The problem is you have one shooting death "Oh lets ban that gun" Someone gets stabbed with a trench knife "Yep banned"
They dont relise they are not stopping the problems they are just causing more underground crime activity.

Indeed my friend, as my handgun carry permit instructor said, "an armed society is a polite society." Taking away the weapons leaves only the criminals with them. Lemme go ahead and tell ya, I don't think that burglar is going to wait for you while you call the police. A handgun is meant to defend oneself with and I find it humorous when a liberal says to just 'call the police'. Yeah, cause I carry a cop in my pocket at all times... If someone comes into MY house, he'll get an AK-74, an AR-15, or a 10mm muzzle in their face. I would say he'd get a Mosin to the face but the Bayonet would just impale him and explaining that one would be kinda tough...
