So I am just looking for some advice from someone who is actually in a sword based martial art and has lots of experience. I fully understand that each of these swords are "worthless" when compared to a real shinto nihonto. So the three I have in front of me are the ryumon practical dragon, paul chen/hanwei practical plus, and the paul chen/bugei/hanwei raptor nanbokucho.
any comments are greatly appreciated.

While Im not in any sword art, I have afew friends who are. Most have started out with the PPK (Practical Plus Katana). I think you mean a Nihonto. I have handled many of my friends swords and I loved how the PPK felt in my hands. Hanwei is the best you can start with in my honest opintion. If the blade bends or breaks, its easy to replace.

If you are looking for a backyard cutter and are new to backyard cutting, I'd suggest any of the Hanwei Raptor katanas. They are rumored to be tough, well-made, fun tu use cutters.

Well I am and I am not... I am a practitioner of many arts and would like to bring them together with a katana... So yes I want something that will handle well and allow great control while offering great strength.

I know someone is gonna say something when I say this but ask your sensei. The reason for that is if you take any sword art, they may require a certain weight for the blade or your sensei may be able to find someone who owns these blades your talking about and see which one feels better to you. Ill be honest though...if you can afford the Raptor series...I would say spend the extra $20 and go with Dynasty forge Musha class. I havent yet owned a DF yet but from what I hear, these blades can take any beating you can give them. While they have a wider blade, it performs as good or better than the raptor. I like Hanwei but I would choose Dynasty Forge over them any day of the week.

Hey there, sorry to disagree but I have interject. There are quite a few swords on the market that are really awesome swords. Of course they are not as awesome as a real nihonto, but still awesome none the less. I own a Hanwei Bushido Katana and it is a fantastic sword! I recomment the hanwei practical pro katana, it's only $30 more then the PPK, but IMHO much better, the tsuka on the PPK is basically an axe handle.(atleast the one I have is)
