Those outrages fees are the *Brokerage Fees*. Which means that they go through Customs and clear your package for you instead of you having to go to the boarder and doing it yourself (It can be done by the phone and internet)
Which means that when delivering packages in Canada, UPS brokers or clears the item through the CBSA (Canadian Boarder Services Agency) and transfers a cost to the buyer. These fees are not disclosed at the time of purchase by the seller, as many sellers from the U.S. are themselves unaware of this.
It is possible for the recipient to avoid these brokerage fees if the parcel is being shipped by a UPS "express" (premium) service, that is, another service other than UPS Standard (Ground). Fees may also be avoided if the recipient clears the parcel themselves at a CBSA office. But UPS makes it almost impossible to self clear. CBSA officially replied in September 2010 to one of the importers that UPS is incorrect and provided detailed procedure of how to self clear the parcel at any CBSA office.
So yes, UPS does bend us Canadians over a barrel... So either go with USPS and wait a little bit longer for your packages, or go with the more expensive method (which prolly comes out to the same amount except you will know about it in advance.)

Just have to throw in a tip o' the hat to KoA: I've ordered multiple times from them and never had anything but excellent service! I absolutely love those folks!

Personally I would avoid UPS for international shipping, they're chiefly a domestic carrier and it shows in their pricing and policies. Maybe DHL is an option, they're pretty much exclusively international now, though that might not work if the seller is an individual and/or not located near a major airport.

Hey, does anybody know if SBG members still get a discount at KOA and if so, what the code is. I'm getting ready to make an order with them.

I know some time ago SBG advertised discounts with KoA but I'm not sure if that's still going or if restrictions are in place. I'd like to know too.
Going to fish around SBG and see if I can find something...

Thanks, I know we used to, but I thought it may have stopped, and wasn't certain. I haven't had much time for digging around today.

Hey guys, Just to save you some time of searching...there is no special discount for SBG members & there never was. Not sure what you all are thinking of. We don't do special discounts off because our prices are so low to begin with. We give everyone a great discount everyday!

That you do! And we love you guys for it. I think Liam might have been thinking of "Arms of Valor" --which offers a 10% discount on Gen 2/Legacy Arms for SBG visitors with the code "SBG" at checkout---or "Museum Replicas Limited," which offers a 10% discount on their entire line up with the code "sbgweb." But those and other discounts are listed on the main site: www.sword-buyers-guide.com/discount-swords.html

Thanks Crystal...you beat me to it. I was looking at something in SBG about discounts when I realized that KoA traditionally just gives competitive prices and matches any price. Was about to post it later today, but that's a moot point now. So happy that KoA - as well as the other kids on the block - are all about bringing quality and price together. How things have changed in just the last several years. Thanks for the recent Hanwei/Tinker sale too...I'm definitely a happy camper

They are A OK in my book, great prices and excellent service with good customer relations. I wish that I could buy more from them but import fees and shipping eat me alive. So I have to wait until I go to the States or have someone come this way and order something that will fit in a suitcase and include it in the $500 duty free limit. Unfortunately, there are other items to be included also such as gifts. My name would be mud if I didn’t bring the gifts and of course this all eats into the duty free limit.
