But it sure looks pretty sweet: I happened to find this by chance while perusing the website DeviantArt and after my initial "Wolverine on steroids" impression, all I could think about was how horrible the balance on something like that would be.

actually, if made correctly the hilt being like a glove puts the balance half way decent. personally i wouldnt want one tho.

If the blades are short, it should not be too unbalanced. It is too radical for my taste however.

Ah, but that katar one has one blade and it's oriented parallel to the forearm, whereas this has 3 blades oriented perpendicular to the forearm with the edge in.

I dunno, the balance could go either way. It would definitely be a heavy SOB though. Lol. I think if the inside of the handle was fitted to your wrist properly it could be a pretty comfortable thing to use, even if it's a little fatiguing from weight.

Gauntlet-swords, or pata, actually have some history in India; they were a favorite of the Maratha people, I think. Apparently they're quite efficient when used by a trained warrior, as you can 'punch' the thrust and really put some muscle behind them. Interestingly enough, as the blades were straight, many times they were made with old European sword blades. Something like the katana-wolverine thing above I could also see coming from India; they have some of the craziest weapons!

Oh, I know all about the Pata and their cousins, the Katar. They're very interesting and rather unique little weapons. However, what I was pointing out as impractical was that there are three blades rather than one and that they're single edged blades. While you could still perform the 8 Basic Cuts with something like this, it would be awkward (more so if the blades were oriented outwards).

The thing about aligning blades next to each other this way is that the force of the cut gets distributed equally between the edges, over a wider surface. It's the same reason you can lie down on a spiked carpet without any injuries whereas lying down on a single spike will put a nice hole in you. Best case scenario, you are using three blades to cause about the same amount of damage you could just as well cause with one, so it's not cost efficient in the long run.
In other words: If Wolverine just used one of his claws, he would probably find that it cuts better compared to when he uses all three.
