Hello all, When I was a kid, those Persion or Arab Talwars with the round guards and pommels and colorful velvet covered scabbards were everywhere. Cheapys probably but you don't see them anywhere much anymore. Does anyone put out that model on the repro market, a real, combat ready one? I had one once when I was young, and although probably not truly combat read, as in tempered, hardened carbon steel and all, it was still a beautiful sword. I wonder where you can find them now? Thanks, Freebooter

I'm not sure about the time period of when you were a kid... but I was born in the early-mid '80s, and I don't really remember seeing anything like that anywhere. Of course I was just in Georgia for a couple of years and then I was living in Africa for most of the rest of my life, so it's not like I'm a good source They were most likely Indo-Pakistani crap being sold to the tourist market, though I see you probably found a nice one there when you were a kid. As to where you can find talwars... that's a good question. Your best bet is to either have one custom made or look up some Indian or Pakistani smiths. They shouldn't be that hard to make unless you want something fancy Damascus steel or whatever.

Thanks Elheru, I ws born in 1955 and grew up in Alabama. it was like in the late '60s and early '70s at stores like "World Bizzarres" etc where you used to see them. Where abouts in Africa are you? Africa is a beautiful place from what I have seen in things like "National Geographic" magazine, and various documentaries. Freebooter

Not living in Africa anymore actually, but I grew up for the most part in Nigeria, West Africa. It's a pretty nice country but when you're actually living there, as opposed to just visiting, the poverty and corruption can really get in your face. Honestly kinda depressing. But the people are really sweet (even if they have some strange ideas about Americans sometimes)and very accepting. My parents were missionaries, but they never had trouble but a very few times from the predominantly Islamic people there. Overall growing up there was a good experience... one I didn't appreciate very much at the time, I fear! I fear that as far as the swords go, your experiences are definitely from well before my time... no offense

I know Cold Steel used to make one. This one is a semi-custom, but it doesn't have the disc guard you're looking for:

Maybe it was just the round type pommel I was thinkign of. That looks about like it, but with a nicer blade. Say that is from Cold Steel? How does it handle and all that?

Unfortunately, I dunno. Cold Steel's model went out of production a few years back (along with some of their other, cooler items); I just knew they used to make one. The one pictured above is sold (and possibly made) at a website called EsFord.com for 300$AU; I happened to find it one day while looking for a production kilij (which they make, beautifully, but it's sold out). Anyways, I imagine it would probably handle much like the Cold Steel 1796 Light Cavalry Saber, being that the historical saber was originally based off the Talwar. That's all I can really say without handling it myself.

Try these guys They have been around for a long time but don't get a lot of notice. Both newly made, made to order and also originals. Someone over at Myarmoury had one or two of the new ones. Nothing special but a grade above purely tourist stuff. www.ancientarms.biz/servlet/StoreFront
