Howdy, been lurking, and checking out this board...knowledgeable crowd, supportive of newbies from what I've seen. Kudos to the admins/staff for making it so. I'm not new to forums, I'm admin on my own (not sword related), but am new to sword collecting. Have been learning lots, and I know nothing I have a Musashi Katana, been watching the Youtube vids, and have become a mighty warrior against the foliage in my backyard. water bottles cower in my presence. Now my one question for now, I have recently came into possession of this for a fiver. Can someone tell me what exactly I've picked up, and can I hit my brother in the head with it

It's a shinai. As for hitting your brother in the head with it, go for it; that's essentially what it was designed for.

Vincent: I hope that your comment was made in jest? If it wasn't then even though you may have 1000+ posts you have no understanding of what you are commenting on.
Texal: that is a shinai and it is a training instrument and a weapon. No, you should not hit your brother in the head with it. Yes that happens in kendo but they have armour on and even in armour it can still do damage. Don't hit your brother with it. Respect it as a weapon, would you hit your brother in the head with a katana?

It was. I just forget to use smilies to emphasize the tone of my message at times. Frankly, I wouldn't recommend hitting anyone with a shinai (or bokuto) outside a training situation; I've got one in my closet and I've been hit with it several times and it's not a pleasant sensation.

Blood is right about that. If you don't respect your equipment, you won't respect your swords, either. Shinai can hurt people, even though they seem pretty benign. Also, afford the respect to your brother to not hit him in the head with a training weapon...unless he is wearing proper gear, which is full bogu.

Getting hit with a plain old stick isn't pleasant- getting hit with a bamboo training sword would SUCK. But maybe his brother deserves it- I know my older brother often thought I deserved to be hit with his hockey stick- and that's no joke, he really would kick my ass sometimes.
-oh, almost forgot- hello to a fellow Canadian!

Shinai have a tendency to separate and pinch skin to the point of ripping or cutting it, sometimes in ribbons. Additionally, they're almost as hard as wood. People have been killed in the past by bokken, so lets take a moment to think about that.
Also, without proper treatment (and sometimes, even with the treatment) shinai can sometimes splinter and put people's eyes out.

The others have answered shinai-but as to hitting your brother-all depends on how much you like him and how hard!!

I gave my nephews larp swords for christmas (early present), they whack me as hard as they can and some do hurt especially in the head, they on other hand thought it hilarious.

In addition to being a training weapon a shinai is also a great conditioning tool in the hands of a trusted and well trained uke. We used to strike, never thrust, our midsection between sit-ups and pull-ups as well as prepare our forearms and shins and thighs for blocking in my old school dojo. As far the splitting and cutting it can happen so we wrapped them in heavy canvas. This again is a training practice in a very controlled environment.
We never conditioned dour head though...we had a guy who thought it would work. Perhaps he had already conditioned too much.

Tom, your shinai weren't exactly the freshly out of the box type. i think posting your vids would be fine...and welcome! To those who don't know what I'm talking about, Tom's shinai are heavily padded, like boffers, so most of the danger factor that can come with unarmed shinai sparring is removed.
