well as many tsuka's I have done, none of them were done with hishi gami's. ( Ive only done about 4 tsuka's) So whats the most common hishi gami used? Ive looked at the one website that shows how to do tsuka maki and it explains about the hishi gami. BUT for some reason I can relly understand what he's saying. when you fold the paper 5 times...is each hishi gami just 2 slips of paper into one and then cut into squares? Any info would be very helpful for me.

If you are referring to this: pages.prodigy.net/tlbuck/tsuka/tsuka.htmHere's how I read it: You take one piece of standard weight paper and fold it over on itself 5 to 11 times (more folds will give you a thicker hishigami), then cut off the rest of the unfolded paper- leaving you a strip of folded over on itself paper. From this strip you will cut several hishigami squares, each will be '2W' -what he mean there is it will be twice (2 times) as wide as the width of your ito. When you look at the description of folding the paper over if you look to the left side column of the site you can see where he explains about 1W meaning one width unit of whatever ito you're using. There is also a description of how to make individual hishigami one at a time using a rectangle of paper that measures one inch by one half inch (1" x 1/2") and folding over on itself until you have one hishigami. Does that make sense? :?:
