I am currently trying to decide what kind of sword to buy. I'm looking for one that can be used for medium cutting, has a price of $150 CDN or less (I have a small budget), and fits my preffered methods of weilding. I need a sword that I can switch from a right hand grip to a left hand grip smoothly, so no 'basket guards', as well as being able to be weilded with two hands. I don't really care about the culture/era, so a Japanese, Chinese, or European sword will all work equaly well for me. Any suggestions :?:
Please keep in mind that I'm pretty new at all this.

Welcome to SBG, Dreamer! I'm thinking... here's a quick list for you to check out, okay? And keep in mind that I'm not up to date on the USD to CDN conversion ratio, so I just kept it to sub-$150USD. Katana---v Munetoshi Beater ($80) Munetoshi Matsu ($150) Hanwei Practical Light ($150) Euros---v Hanwei/Tinker Bastard Sword (two versions, one with fuller, one without... I reccomend with. Either one is around $140) Hanwei/Tinker Long Sword ($150ish?) Keep in mind that of the katana, the Beater is TH whereas the Matsu and PLK are DH. For the euros, all Hanwei/Tinker swords come a bit dull, so you'll need to touch up the edge a bit, OR have your sword shipped to Valiant Armoury's Custom Sword Shoppe, where you can get them professionally sharpened for $10, and a very nice grip wrap for an extra $30-$40, if you want it. I'm not too familiar with Chinese swords, but I *THINK* that the Hanwei Rodell Cutting Jian is around $150... but I may be wrong. In the $150 range, however, I think those will be the best deals you can find, unelss you browse the classifieds for a used sword. Hope this helps! -Slayer

Chris- They don't, sorry for being unclear. You'd have to buy it from KoA or somewhere and have it shipped to VA for sharpening/etc. That's what I did. I'll edit my post to explain more... I was typing quickly and mispoke. :? Vincent- Thanks, I thought I might be a tad off.... oh well, their dadao's are cool too, lol. -Slayer

do not ship to Valiant Armory before speaking to Sonny Suttles, there are times when he cannot accept commissions due to his Valiant Armory workload, and even if he CAN at the time you ship he still needs to know what is going on with the new sword that just showed up at his place. so anyway, make sure you talk to Sonny before you ship him anything. the best way to get hold of him is to call him on the phone. email, PM, text, etc are just not the best way, but that guy lives with his phone grafted onto his hip. # is on his website.

Don't forget to check the classifieds, I remember seeing some pieces going for very reasonable prices that fit the category you're looking for.

Yeah, definitely check the classifieds. A lot of SBG members buy a *lot* of swords and wind up reselling many of them to buy more shiny, as such many used swords have seen very little actual use.
As far as what I'd recommend in that price range, I would say Hanwei/Tinker bastard sword or one of Hanwei's less expensive practical katanas depending on whether you want Eastern or Western style. Hanwei is somewhat of an entry-level brand in the world of performance swords, but their products are inexpensive, solid, and have pretty decent handling and lately they've been partnering up with outside talent to make surprisingly good functional cutting swords. I'd second the Rodell jian too (I'm liking mine so far) but it is indeed a bit out of your price range unfortunately. But then again you might get lucky on a classified sale, as I did.
