The thread on hanwei bundles got me to thinking. There seems to be a growing market for customized katana that I bet Hanwei hasn't noticed yet. I know of several people on this board alone, myself included, who would jump at the opportunity to buy a Bamboo Mat blade alone and have it customized with our own personal choice of fittings and such. We just, of course, would not want to have to pay full price for blade alone and it seems wasteful to buy a completed sword with no intention of reusing the fittings. Now Hanwei isn't going to listen to the average consumer regarding this (I know because I've tried) But if enough of their resalers (SBG, KOA, Wiwingti, VA, etc.) let them know that there is growing request for bare blades from their more popular swords then maybe, just maybe, they'll get the hint that there's an untapped market here for them. So what do you say, guys? Would you mind making the request to Hanwei? Asking can't hurt, right?

That is not true. Hanwei used to sell blade in shirasaya -- Tiger and Shinto. They did not sell very well so Hanwei stopped making them. Bugei also used to have blade in shirasaya as well. I would love to have a HWS-1 steel blade in shirasaya.

I didn't know they sold shirasaya. What was the difference in price between the complete sword and the shirasaya?

They were discontinued a while ago so I cannot remmember. You may like customizing. But most people are more than willing to buy finished products. Customizing is time consuming and consumers this day want instant gratification.
IMHO, it is actually cheaper with a finished sword. I am having a Bushido customized by Aaron Justice. It would cost me much more if Aaron has to make new saya and tsuka core.
