Hello, I have been given my fathers swords and need to find out how to determine age and maker. I have learned some of the terminology.
One sword is a long sword 71-1/2 cm with a 20 cm tang. I was told this sword is over 500 years old.
The other sword is a WW2 Japanese Army sword and was told that it is actually a old samurai sword that was cut down to be used a army sword.
There are about 18 symbols on the long sword tang and the WW2 tang has symbols also.
Can you help?
Thank you.
R Walker

There are some knowledgeable folks here, but they will need some photos to be able to help. The more, the better I would think. One bit of advice: don't clean anything, especially the tang of a Japanese sword.
Welcome, and good luck!

Thank you Maynar, I will attempt to attach photos of the long sword tang, the photos of the blade are most difficult to take.

ok hold on here, let's not call fake just yet. those pictures do indeed look funny but there may be a good reason for that. ok Walker what did you do to get those pictures to look like that, and could you please provide a full color picture or two of the swords and their tangs, could be we'd be able to pick up some more info that way too.

r1-dave, the pictures may well be real, they have just had the contrast enchanced, have been oversharphened and desaturated to empasise the engravings.

Thank you craigd.
Yes they are real and you are correct. Photo Shop work well in high contrast. The photos I have of the sword did not turn out. I do have the tang photos list here. (Comment, seems I have already been judged of making fake rubs. It was a long process, candle smoke, tape and the tape to paper, then scan, and photo shop the scan and then you get the high contrast photos. This will be the last time I justify myself to anyone.) Thanks for your comment, you are up on what it is.

Hi Walker, No problem. The originals are nice and crisp and definitely helps with the reading when combined with the normal photos. tbh it didn't cross my mind that anyone would fake them but I guess these guys have seen it numerous times hence the suspicion although I think Dave could have been more tactful. Unfortnately I can't help much more than that. The ww2 weapon does have the cherry blossom stamp at the top typical of Showa era weapons (post 1926), and it looks like the character for Sho inside it. The 1st character on the older weapon suggests it is from the Bi provinces (bishu?) but I am not confident I read it right I will follow this thread with interest methinks :geek:

Haha, you guys took that the wrong way. Seriously though, you may want to mention that you modded the crap out of the pics to make them more legible. I think the actual non-shopped pics are fine. Seems like you got some cool old swords ! Do we get to see the rest of the swords ??
