As some of you guys know I recently got a Hanwei Torino rapier and looked into getting a custom handle from Darkwood Armory. They gave it a couple of shots but it appears to be technically impossible to replicate one of the features without it breaking--this is probably why Hanwei doesn't use wood-core handles on many of its swords. Specifically, the handle has a thin lip protruding from the front end that seems to connect with a corresponding notch in the guard, probably to help keep the guard from wobbling about.
For the record I'm actually pretty satisfied with my experience, Darkwood was prompt and helpful throughout the process--not their fault Hanwei did something strange. But rapier-lovers should be aware that at least some of the Hanwei Renaissance swords clearly aren't aftermarket-friendly aside from swapping out the blade. Darkwood seems confident the plastic handle is relatively sturdy, though I may still see about contacting Hanwei directly about a possible replacement should the need arise.

If Darkwood said that the plastic handle was going to be OK, I wouldn't sweat it a bit.
I do understand wanting a wooden core grip on the blade, I would want one myself if possible.
Are you thinking of changing out the guard since you were in contact with Darkwood? If you changed out the guard then they could most definitely make a wooden core grip for it.

I could, but at that point I might as well have just bought a different sword as all I'll have left of the original is the $40 blade. I'll just keep all this in mind if/when I'm in the market for a nicer one.
The sword itself isn't half bad, I'll be doing a review of it at some point soonish.

Yeah, when I posted I didn't think about dumping a load of coin on fitting a blade when you could probably just buy what you wanted outright for the price from a maker.
