So, this type of sword has held my interest for quite a while now and I was wondering if there were any entry level schiavona type blades on the market. So far, I've only been able to find the ones by Del Tin. I know a hilt as complicated as a schiavona's doesn't exactly scream "easy to manufacture" but it seems like I've seen one around that wasn't called a schiavona but it was called something else.

Windlass made a Shiavona at one point, didn't they? Very pretty sword if I remember correctly. ** Yep, discontinued now, but you might toss the suggestion over to Paul since he's in contact with them right now about maybe bringing some old designs back. Here's a review of it over on MyArmory www.myarmoury.com/review_mrl_schia2.html

Hrm, at 3lb 1oz, I can see why it wasn't a popular piece. If it becomes available without my interference, then I might look at it again, but having a single hander at just under 3lbs and the POB 5 inches out, I know that the Windlass piece wouldn't be incredibly responsive. But thanks for the info Wes, I'll see about digging up some discontinued models and see if there are any that I could ask Paul to mention.

I have one of the dis-con Windlass Schiavona's....beautiful piece even if it's not the best handling sword. I did a review on the old forum on it. Besides Del-Tin (which would be my first choice) , Armour Class also makes a Schiavona, other than them would have to go full tilt custom. The Cold Steel blasphemy isn't even in the ball park.............................

Baskethilts tend to be pretty heavy in general, though, simply because the basket itself adds a lot. From what I can understand, it's often tricky to get their weight and balance right.
Anyway, I certainly wouldn't say 3 lbs is an unrealistic weight.

3 pounds no, not unrealistic, but on top of having the PoB so far out it makes for an awkward single-hander.

The Cold Steel Horseman's basket is that far away from the one Windlass put on their Schiavona? Looks quite close to me...but why, oh whyyyy, an egg shaped pommel? When it was on sale at 99$, I considered the CS Horseman as a compromise low-budget schiavona (was thinking of getting it a custom cat's head pommel)... Anyway, the WS Schiavona can still be found here: www.lawranceordnance.com/the_sharpened_edge/swords_european/schiavona.php(At that price, might as well save up and go for Del Tin...) There are also a few European makers that make some sorts of Schiavona-esque swords: www.armorymarek.com/schiavona--basketswordfabri-armorum.com/english/foto.php?big=sch1.jpgThe Del Tin sure is nice! Alas, at a quite "interesting" pricetag... (There must be a way to make a relatively affordable schiavona for us!)

what about Darkwood Armory/ they are pretty good with the baskets, do they make one? I bet they could and I understand their prices are very resonable.

From what I have seen of their work, I would definitely go with Darkwood Armory.
Outside of that Arms and Armor would probably be the best bet this side of the pond, but the price point may be a bit higher.
Have you thought about contacting Brenno for a quote on a hilt? Maybe John Lundemo.
